Jake
I'm not having any luck finding another VVTi lump for my car but I've seen a low mileage non-VVTi 2JZ-GTE engine and turbos for sale. Apart from swapping the VVTi head, turbos , injectors, throttle body and loom onto the replacement engine is there anything else I would need to do? Do both engines use the same spec head gasket? How thick is a stock head gasket? 1.0mm? I'm going to get the VVTi head checked and skimmed if necessary but I'll need a thicker head gasket then. Please let me know if there's a reason not to do it this way - before I waste a load more of my redundancy money on yet another engine Thanks
Pete
So yours is proper dead then Wouldn't importing one from Japan be an option? Maybe Nic could help out with this? They come up quite often on http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/
Pete
See http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=30344&highlight=supra+japanese for a few tips
Pete
vvti エンジン means vvti engine if that helps
Jake
Cheers Pete, but if swapping the head achieves the same thing I think I'd rather do that than mess about with importing from Japan.
Alex
The blocks are the same AFAIK...but 90% of what bolts to it is different... So get your head checked....then go from there... Think the stock HG is 1.2mm ... but if you have to skim .4mm then you can use the HKS 1.6mm HG....
Ian C
That's one big mofo skim Not sure at what point the head is junk because the cam journals will be misaligned too much... -Ian
garethr
Not important if you're not interested in the Japanese option, but http://www.f1kits.com/Keyword%20Search.htm has a lot of Japanese language keywords for Yahoo.

I realise the intake side and exhaust side will need swapping over but what else? I think the anciliary items are the same (water pump, altenator, etc) but what about the sump and other things I may not have considered? Unfortunately I have to make a decision today whether I'm going to buy this other (non-VVTi) engine or not. Thanks
Pete
Unfortunately I have to make a decision today whether I'm going to buy this other (non-VVTi) engine or not. You mean in about 7h 16m ?
Alex
I'd get the block you're looking at...most of the different stuff as you've mentioned bolts to the head...and if you're using the VVTI head I can't see you having a problem - you'll then have a spare head you can get miching/fettled for the bronze one A plan or what! Cough - okmaybenot90% - cough There COULD be differences in the sump but I would have thought they wouldn't be in the way it bolts to the block - more like it's shape (if there is any difference)
Alex
You mean in about 7h 16m ? Once Jake's made his decision I'd like to know where you've seen this engine....but I don't want it made public now so others can snipe.
Jake
Thanks guys. It looks this might work then. I was hoping Terry might reply to this thread, Mig tells me Terry knows all about this vvti conversion business.

Pete
Didn't ChrisW have a block on its own?..and PaulE was talking about uprated blocks at ok prices?
Chris Wilson
Sump is different on VVTi, quite how it differs except in outward appearance i don't know. I have good none VVti TT block, and a mint, superb, fabulous ultra low mileage N/A engine too. No VVTi ones at the moment.
Jake
Well I didn't get the other one It was on eBay, as Pete was hinting at. The bidding was up to £691 with 1 minute to go. So left it till the last few seconds then bid £812 but the page took a few seconds to refresh and then said "Auction Has Ended" So it went for £691 in the end, 46k miles, complete with auto box, turbos etc etc
