Supra_Al
Early July i have my Sup MOT.......thing is, ATM i have no fog lamp.Yes no big problem i know, but i want to wire the r/h/s rear reverse lamp to be the fog lamp.I have the wiring to an illuminated switch so no probs......all i have to do now is find a red bulb .AFAIK you can't get one, so i tried painting a bulb.It wasn't very bright and rather 'pink'. Is there a glass paint that i can use?......also heard that you can buy an LED red bulb? Any input would be useful. Al.

Steve W
Those red LED 'replacement' "bulbs" are quite dear ! I think about £15 each from memory ! You can get them for Side and Stop ie. 5w and 21w (but not 5/21w I don't think?) They all start clear/colourless and light up red/orange whatever might be great for clear indicators ? ? (capless ones would be great for repeaters - I HATE that little orange dot in the 'clear' sides - looks bloody AWFUL !)
Supra_Al
Cheers Steve......tried painting a bulb today......not good:( ,looks like i will be buying one of those LED bulbs. Al.

Steve W
oooooooooh, now that looks pretty cheap-ish, and just the right ones ? Good find Al' ! ! MUCH better for clear indicators than orange 'painted' bulbs I've ALWAYS thought clear-ish/orang-ish indicators look CR*P.
Supra_Al
Will order tomorrow, let you know if they are any good. Al.
FaithStalker
LED's dont work to good as they point upwards and only light half the lens, might fail, try these guys for bulbs - i emailed them and they put me in touch with the local stockists / ordering people, they do almost all the bulbs in all the colours!!!!!!!!!! http://www.autostyling.co.uk/index.asp or try these http://www.speeding.co.uk/acatalog/www_speeding_co_uk_Hot_Spots_108.html
Supra_Al
Thanks for that Mr Faithstalker...........saved me wasting money on the LED, as you say it will sit in the holder 'upwards' so would be no good. I'm still not having any luck as ABC will not sell their red bulbs to the public ,There is no local supplier to me either! How stupid is that, all i want is a red 21W bulb. *Stamps feet* Al. FaithStalker
bloody hell - took em days to email me back ! Whens your MOT? if you can wait till saturday i can get to my local place and buy one for you (if they have one - i bought the last one a few months ago!), then post it - although there not packed very well, so i'd have to encase it in bubble wrap etc. I cant remember how much it cost, think it was only a few quid i think, postage would probably cost a lot more ! where in the country are u? Supra_Al
MOT is in about 10 days time, so i like to put it in earlier, hopefully this week.Does the bulb show a 'strong' red or that pinky red? Thanks for your help, i am in Swindon,Wilts (M4), what i might do now is unwire the twin J spec brake lights, and put the inner ones to fog again as i have already got the wiring there. Then i'll return it back to twin brake, after the MOT:p I don't mind coverting a reverse light to fog permantly, but there doesn't seem to be a perfect bulb out there? Many thanks again for your help, Al.
FaithStalker
The bulb i am using is from my local source, and i'm running the JIC standard rear fog light conversion (one of the reverse lights), this bulb shows quite a good red colour, the best yet. my MOT is in aug/september time, i'm sure it will be ok as long as i dont take it back to the ar**hole i did last year who was determined to fail it (he failed it once until i complained to him!) conversion as follows MOT guy : "But its not very intense...." Me : "thats the brightest bulb that can go in there" MOT guy: "But its supposed to have 2 reverse lights" Me : "But the f***** VIN plate doesnt even show up on your computer as its an import - and lots of cars have 1 reverse light, look at the ford focus" MOT Guy: "But its been messed around with, it originally had 2 reverse lights....i'm not sure...." Me : "Show me where it says it needs to reverse lights ....come on show me..." MOT Guy: "ok ok i'll let it through this time..." Me : "You think i'm coming back here..." Thanks for your kind offer and help. P.S. My MOT guy is very 'friendly' (I don't mean in a sexual way!!)Al. I'll let you know how i get on. Thorin
Me: ...oh, and the fog light doesn't work but I can't be arsed to fix it. MOT Tester: Well I'm not fixing it for you. Me: yeah yeah, I'll fix it tomorrow. MOT Tester: alright but you're getting the beers in when we get to the pub then.
Steve W
You don't even NEED reversing lights on an MOT test ! ! ! they're NOT part of the MOT (believe it or not ! ! !) NOR does your REAR wash/wipe have to work ! NOR do you need a working spare ! (BUT, if you're caught by the fuzzies with an 'illegal' - bald etc. - spare that's a NICK ? !) NOR does your battery have to be 'secured' (HOWEVER that's a nick by the coppers ? !) lots of little curiosities like those in the test........ In other words, the MOT and the actual LAWS are at odds a little:music:
Thorin
You sure about the reverse light steve? I'm sure you had to have at least one light and on the n/s. Could be wrong though.
Steve W
NO mate, I can be ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE on that one ! ! We even had a customer ask for a new Rev' Light switch on his old Sierra before he brought it in for the test.... Turns out the switch in his particular 'box/year was ~£60 ! ! (every other one.... ~£15/20:( ) BUT, the AE's both said as long as HE didn't care, it didn't matter anyhow ! (AND, I am an 'assist' on the tests, so know exactly what is tested/not tested......) DON'T GET ME WRONG, I think rev' lights are CRUCIAL.... I really hate the trend of ONE rev / ONE fog light... Only ONE bulb to rely on... ( I don't venture out in fog if i can help it, but, you can't avoid reversing !!)

I guess I must have assumed that if you have to have at least one fog and o/s that you must also have to have one reverse on the other side too.
