Kip
Not sure if this is opening old wounds - Has any one seen the latest version of War of the worlds? I watched it last night - I do not recommend it!! - watch the original, a far superior experience. Talk about disappointed with a big D. Any other dire films about I should avoid at the moment? how_supra
Yeah it started off quite well I thought but I was left with a feeling of being ripped off at the end. Quite a disappointing film in all honesty. I like how the plane that crashed conveniently missed the car when everything around it was destroyed. AJI
I also think the ending was crap. It had so much potential with all those smart effects with the clouds and lightning.... but then it kinda went downhill from there. His dumb ass son should have definitely been killed... but in all true american style films .... there is a nice happy family reunion to please the cinema audience at the end. how_supra
Yeah I thought that bit was odd as well. There is no way he would have survived that explosion thing. I know we didn't see it but still.

ManwithSupra
The new one had the same story line as the original, The new one was more graphic and had better effects (of course) and the endings were the same. The aliens died due to the bugs in the water. All of it was fairly similar but there would be diffrences in the two. I do prefer the older one as it seemed a bit more scarier cos of the dodgy old special effects used :-s

lust2luv
You can't call the 1950s movie "the original", that's like calling the animated version of The Lord Of the Rings "the original". It's a 19th century book by HG Wells for goodness sake. The musical version (soon to be a stage play!) is far more faithful to the book than either of these movie versions (well.. bar the singing). Personally I thought the Spielberg movie was excellent in many ways, the tripods destruction creating the same level of awe for a 21st century audience as the original book did for a 19th and early 20th, but it is majorly flawed. Way too many ridiculous plot holes and the happy ending with all family members completely unscathed is ludicrous. Oh and he should have resisted showing the aliens, they just aren't remotely scary. Still very enjoyable and well worth watching IMO, so long as you stick your brain in neutral and don't think about it too much.

Daston
yeah thats what I thought but surly if they went to all the trouble of leaving the "war machines" here on earth why the hell didnt they just stay here then and not go to the trouble of killing things oh and surly they would have died from the cold that time around. lust2luv
Anyone heard the "original" Orson Welles radio play? Empire gave it away on cassette a few years ago, and I'm sure it's available to listen to on the net. You can see why people thought it was for real if they tuned in part way through, though they were definitely more gullible times. Jeff Wayne's working on an all CGI movie version of his musical - couple of years off, but could be cool. At least his was set in the right country and right time period, unlikely any of the other versions mentioned here.

black cat
got musical version on cd, superb. old film just shockin. wat are you taking about??? The new film i thought was fantastic!!! loved the concept and the way small parts of the film resembled the book. Effects were excellent. ending was too quick but it was in the book aswell. ok would have been better if it had copied the book perfect (set in england) but wat do you expect with an american slant on it... one of the best si fi films seen in a long time....... new star wars films (shite) and as for lord of the rings........ tt steve
terribleturner
I enjoyed the effects in the new cersion but felt that it was just lacking, and hated the part when they go to Tim Robbins basment. Just slowed the whole movie down way too much. Was unneccassary IMO. Looking forward to Doom, my company did the sound on it so fingers crossed i may get a sneak preview

Also - only Spielberg would take an alien invasion story and add in a neglectful father's attempts to gain redemption as a central theme. I suppose it added an emotional core to the film. Agree that the Martian's demise was a bit underwhelming. It was as if the whole film just suddenly ran out of steam.
