Lands End to John O'Groats

Here's an idea ....... does anyone fancy a race against the sun from Lands End to John O'Groats ?????

We'd have to go for the longest day of the year (next year to allow planning ..... obviously) to give us a chance and I would suggest that we make it a charitable event.

It may be possible to get Toyota involved from a sponsorship / publicity point of view but maybe if it's a starter then a senior or influential club member might bring their influence to bear ! Particularly as this might and should involve other car clubs (as yes I've already posted it on the zed site :tomato: ) for a little spice and competition !!!!!

So ....... any charitably minded adventurous people out there up for a challenge !

The idea sounds cool, but I think you might be have to be careful about using the word race.

Its just too open for people doing stupid things, the last thing we need is more attention from the police.

Well ...... it's about a 17 hour trip assuming you stick to the speed limit ..... and there's about 17 hours of daylight ...... it really shouldn't need excessive speeds, just a bit of planning, luck with the traffic and two drivers per car

Lets see how many people are interested ?

Multimap reckons it's 839.5 miles and will take you 14 hours 50 minutes. So you shouldn't have to speed. About £370 in petrol assuming 20mpg and that you live near the intended route.

:looney:

you might want to double the £370 luv, unless you don't actually WANT to get home again?

I think 500 miles per day is reasonable, any more than that and you start making mistakes. Sort out a route that takes in some scenery and doesnt just take the shortest route and do it over 2 or maybe 3 days. You can do a large amount of it on motorways but Im sure thats not how people would choose to do it.

I actually did Lands End to John O'Groats on a pushbike many years ago. We did 100 miles a day and took 10 days to do it. Great journey and such a lot to see.

I might be up for it.

Whereas this is possible on paper at legal speeds I do doubt it would be really feasible in practice. I took part in "Bugging Britain" for charity years ago in a Volkswagon Transporter van with two other drivers over the Saturday and Sunday. Now before you start shouting that the Supra is a little quicker than an old VW they do manage the legal limits quite happily.

The problem that you will face is the longest day is of course in the middle of summer and in the middle of summer the roads around Scotland and Cornwall will be clogged with tourists.

18 June 2006

- Sunrise (in Scotland) @ 0428

- Sunset (in Cornwall) @ 2119

Total daylight hours = 16hr 51m

Auto-route calculates the route (at average legal speeds) to 16hr 19m without breaks, fuel stops or hold-ups!

If there is a record to be had then go for it but otherwise I would advise taking a weekend over it and enjoying the drive.

Although I'm right across the country from the start and finish, this would be a superb journey, definately something you'd remember for years :)

Doing it all in the sunlight would be an epic achievement, but as others have said you'd have to commit yourself to braking the law :thumbdown

if i am still in the UK this time next year, sign me on the dotted line as well, would love to do this, and good to hang out with friends :)

I like the idea of what JB suggested, 2 or 3 days (3 would better), if you are going to spend that on the fuel, may as well enjoy the drive and the scenery, there is so much to see, and may as well make the most of it. turn it into a proper road trip, rather than rush to get to the end.

we could to a video and photographic diary of the journey as well.

after its over, everyone on the east coast could do one back there as well.
