Confusion over correct spark plugs

Guys and Gals,

 

I have read the FAQ and searched through posts, I understand the theory being talked about but i have to say, i'm none the wiser to knowing what to choose, so please forgive me!

 

My car is a J-spec with a 2nd de-cat and backbox and a hopefully arriving today, 3" 1st de-cat from CW with 1.2 bar restrictor ring. It has an Apexi induction kit as well.

 

What plugs should i buy?, i dont wana spend stupid money but dont want to buy rubbish. I'm just after what options i should consider, what kinda price they are and the best place to get them from.

 

I know this has been covered many times but i think i've totally confused myself with reading everything :)

How comes the 'good' plugs are like 8-10 times for expensive then? Blimey! Ive been putting off my mini service on the car because i thought the plugs would cost me a small fortune!

Usually because they are iridium and will last a lot longer between changes.

So what are the iridium plugs people would use for a bpu car? and how much are they?

 

NGK BKR7E's, sound really cheap, if thats what you all recommend then fine, just curious.

 

Would be nice to have a plug last longer than 6-8000, unless of course the iridium's are stupid money.

 

My 1st decat pipe has also just arrived :) should any new gaskets be bought before fitting it? Cant believe how small it is, thought it would twice the size!

Denso IK 24 Iridum. I think they were £48 at the last group buy - Try giving TurboFit a call, they may do it cheaper. On the box it says they're good for 60K miles!

No gapping required on the Denso Iridiums

I've always had NGKs, some people say they melt but I've never actually heard of any melting. Some people also say Iridiums explode, but I've never heard any of those stories either!

 

NGKs are about 1/8 the price, but last 1/8 the mileage of the Iridiums. Seems fair to me.

Christian, It's a bit of a pain removing the sparkplugs (Fragile Coil lead clips) and time consuming (compared to cars where you pull off the HT leads and remove the spark plugs from there). If you're ok with that then go for the cheaper option.

It seems that people with the NGKs and Iridiums are both happy! Maybe go with the cheaper NGKs and see how you go? Once you have changed the spark plugs you'll probably be ok changing them as and when. The first time you'll probably end up breaking the coil clips if you are not careful.

And after the 1st de-cat, restrictor ring and sparkplugs do an ECU reset as sometimes people have problems if they dont after being de-catted.

 

How olds the car Christian? If you haven't done so, it'll be worth replacing the fuel pump with a Walbro to keep up with the extra fuel demand. Jap pumps are not good as the UK and deteriorate over the years.

Terry i too have been told that by a decent tuner/rebuilder. He was telling me just as he was putting them in my car and sending £80 on a set. :( not happy tbh! but they are in there and dont seem to be causing a problem yet, last thing i want is a lump of ceramic going through the system. Anyone else have a comment on this?

Iridium's are fine if your car is running properly and your fuel is good.

 

If you are detonating your engine via too much boost then you tend to break the ceramic insulators.

 

So they are fine if you're not tuning / being an idiot and overboosting.

Ro - my car is a 96 facelift. I'm going on a rolling road in surrey with some guys from here next sunday, the decat (and whatever plugs i go with) are being fitted on the saturday before. So will find out then how the fueling is. But was planning on fitting a Walbro around xmas time.

 

Have seen a few posts about resetting the ecu after this lot so will definetly do that.

 

Was just about to order some ik24's, then read Terry's post! Thanks a lot Terry! :) My car was only down with you and the Phoenix guys a couple of weeks ago, dont want it back there for repairs just yet! Just cant believe how cheap the NGK's are, i've never bought plugs that cheap for any car i've owned and its putting me off.

I use them in my BPU VVTI , no problems. They aren't particularly cheap, Partco give good prices, I got six for less than £11. It's just that the Denso Iridiums are very expensive.

 

If you look on Supraforums you'll find that the NGK's are very widely used on Supra's in the States even on higher power levels than BPU.

 

I use the NGK BKR7E's, I've heard that the NGK BCPR7E's aren't quite so good at idle.

BKR7E and BCPR7ES are EXACTLY the same plug, the ONLY difference is that the BKR7E have a standard size plug end, and BCPR7ES have a slightly larger end (ooh-err) - so basically if you have tired/old coil packs the latter may be a better idea, otherwise either will be fine!

 

As for iridiums, if you're detting I think breaking £50 worth of plugs is the least of your worries TBH!!
