Guest chiefvinso
I have just purchased a double decat from whifbitz. Being back in wales for the weekend I decided to pop to my local garage to have them fitted. The second pipe is fine (longest one) but the first pipe I havecome across probs with. I spoke to whifbitz and explained that mine was a late 96 tt pre vvti jspec etc. before ordering. The front pipe replacement has a hole with a thread (presumably for the lambda). When I was under the car I noticed that there is another little wire at the bottom of the cat pipe - what is this? There is also not a place for it to go on my front decat pipe. On further inspection the lambda sits on the down pipe section before the cat section so it looks like I dont need a decat pipe with a labda sensor hole as I wont need to touchthe lambda. So do I need this bottom wire (could be an o2 sensor?), if so why would I get a front decat pipe without the necessary holes from a reputable supplier. Could I also plug the lambda thread with a bolt (shot enuff not to cause any probs) or should I be on the fone to whifbitz? Please help! Thanks, Keith
Homer
The first decat pipe should have a hole for the O2 sensor. The 2nd decat pipe has a cat temp sensor. This temp sensor can just be removed or tied out of the way when you fit the pipe.
Guest chiefvinso
Hi Homer, thanks for response. A lambda is an o2 right? The cat has only a little wire at the bottom. There is nothing coming off the second cat. Will not using the cat temp sensor cause any probs or cos the cats are not there it wont get as hot? Homer
Yes, Lambda and O2 sensors are the same thing. The cat temp sensor doesn't give any feedback to the ECU, it just makes a cat temp warning light up on the dash if the cat overheats. If theres no cat there then theres no problem with it overheating
Guest chiefvinso
ah fanks, so if I just plug the hole on the first decat pipe then I should be able to fit them, right? Also, does it matter what cat you put back in for the mot as the first cat wont go on with the second decat pipe as it has an inner lip or maybe I could ange grind that off when the cat is off. Cheers for your help.
Homer
Sorry mate just had a rethink and realised I gave you wrong info before! The 02 sensor is on the manifold after the turbo's (not on the 1st pipe), the 1st decat pipe normally has no sensor points. The 2nd decat pipe also has no sensors (except the Chris Wilson ones which have a 2nd 02 sensor point). Not sure about MOT's as I have a friendly grarage, but some people have managed an 'honest' pass with no cats at all. Other just refit the 2nd pipe for a certain emissions pass. I noticed that the o2 is not ont the first cat but after the tubbies so thats great as I wont have to change that. I just want to clarify that the sensor at the bottom of the first cat is a cat temp sensor and if it is I can just tie that up out of the way. Also, can I fill the o2 hole on the first decat pipe with a bolt or have I got the wront front cat pipe? Sorry to pester but I am a wee bit confused now. Cheers:blush:
Steve
The sensor at the bottom of the first cat is a temp sensor, so just tie it up out of the way, its not needed.
Guest chiefvinso
Thanks for reply smarty, can anyone just confirm that I can plug the lambda sensor hole on the first decat? Cheers, Keith
Steve
Thanks for reply smarty, can anyone just confirm that I can plug the lambda sensor hole on the first decat? Cheers, Keith I never had a plug hole on my first decat pipe. I would say you can plug it up unless its there to allow you to put the cat sensor in there
SimonB
It sounds like you have the wrong decat pipe. If it has a hole for an O2 sensor it's probably a UK spec one, which won't fit because the flange where it bolts up to the turbos is different. You need to get a Jspec one. Markie
I concur.. I would not bung up the hole personally. Best you make sure you have the proper pipe mate. First decat pipe has no holes at all - Pritty much whats been said above
Guest chiefvinso
Thanks guys, but why would whifbitz give me the wrong pipe? The flange looks like it will fit (3 holes). I shall contact whifbitz tomorrow. FFS cant anything ever go right for me at all!!
Guest chiefvinso
Just to let you know, spoke to Paul at whifbitz this morning and it is the correct pipe but it should have come with a plug for the lambda hole. Anyhow the hole is there for future mods, which I cant rembmer now.
