Mark Ayling
If anyone can help me with this it would be much appreciated... At tick-over I have a nasty rattly-squeaky noise coming from under the bonnet and I have been told by a garage that its my aircon pump. They sprayed something on it which cured it for a very short while but it soon came back again. The aircon still seems to work properly, but I guess either the belt or the pump itself is on the way out? I just wondered if anyone had had similar problems or knew the best way to diagnose it without paying someone to have a look. TIA Mark. Syed Shah
I've known this to happen on cars that have the heater/Ac being used infrequently. Usually, leaving it all on full for a while should cure it.
matt
Sounds like the belt ....... if it was the pump, spraying it would make no difference at all
Brian Jackett
It is the belt, spraying it stops it squeking but it soon comes back. Time for a new belt or checking tightness. Not the pump defo no
Guest Martin F
Hate to be the odd one out here, but couldn't it be the front bearing in pump if the belt has been over tensioned sometime ?
Brian Jackett
Not if spaying with wd40 stops it. The pump bearing will be sealed and impossible for the wd40 to stop it. You odd one out you
Mark Ayling
Thanks for the replies chaps. I guess the belt would be the cheapest thing to change anyway, don't suppose anyone knows how much its going to cost me...?
Guest Martin F
Unfortunately from Toyota it's not cheap, about £60 - £70. But some of the servicing guys like Leon and Chris have an alternative, may want to look them up. Odd......who me ?
Brian Jackett
I have always wanted to know why they start to squek when they get old. Can anyone tell me
Phil Wall
OK Nurd mod on. I think it is because the rubber starts to harden and gives less grip and the belt moves laterally and therefore rubs slightly in the grooves causing the sound. OK sounds crap, only and idea or more like a guess.
