Worn Diff, Symptoms?

Recommended Posts

In the last few weeks I have started to notice an odd feeling when cornering hard. It feels as though the rear end is loose when really pushing it, as though the rear tyres are soft and squirming around or something is loose. I first remember noticing it before I had my spin a few weeks ago, see [thread=50679]THIS THREAD[/thread]. I put it down to over inflated tyre pressures at the time, but I'm now thinking it was more than that.

Anyway I took my car to my tuners yesterday, they put it on the ramp and checked the wheels, bearings and suspension components (all new and replaced in last 6 months) everything was tight and no obvious problems.

I was under the car with the mechanic as he checked the rear drive shafts and we noticed that there seemed to be a problem with the rear diff, ie. when one wheel was turned the main drive shaft would turn, but the opposite wheel would hardly move (in opposite direction.)

I'm assuming this is the symptom of a worn LSD? So could this be the cause of the odd rear traction problem I seem to be feeling when cornering?

Sounds like normal diff action to me. You HAVE checked the rear tyre pressures carefully, and examined the rear tyres for damage, or even the wheel nuts for torque?

So that's normal then, hmmm.... I'll check wheel nuts and tyre pressure again then tomorrow.

The other thing noticed, was that there is quite a bit of play between the main drive shaft and the gearbox. You can turn the shaft and feel it's loose on the joint, there is also an audible clunk. Will this be worn splines Chris? Is it be a big job to fix ie. gearbox open and rebuild?

Check your shocks are OK as well, and if they are adjustable, that they are on the same settings...

The shocks (Hypermax II's) were new about 6 months ago, they look visibly okay ie. no leaks, etc. Is there a way of testing if they are okay? I'll check the damper settings, cheers Ian.

Do you mean when you turn the propshaft it moves abit before the diff starts to turn ?

To test a shocker the easy way, try a bounce test. Push down on each corner of the car and see how it bounces. I haven't done this test with coilovers before but with normal shocks we at work expect to see 2 small bounces before the car stops again. Anymore than that and you have got a weak shocker. This may be different with coilover but I am unsure.
