I have a broken big toe. Happened eight days ago. It's been taped to the toe next to it since then.

What I want to know is, can I leave it untaped now? I'm finding that, with my toes being held in place, I'm walking awkwardly and it's hurting my leg and foot.

I can't be dealing with going to the hospital just to ask the same question.

Anyone?

depends on how broken it is.

is the bone just fractured? chiped? The reason they taped it to the other toe is to let the bone grow back together. The bigger the damaged area the longer it takes to heal and the more important it is to hold them in place.

the the bone is broken in 2 or with a larger broken surface area then with out the tape your movement will stop the bone from healing......

But you will feel the pain and stop moving anyway if that is the case.

Im a physio if that counts. After 8 days the bones are just beginning to heal really so id be tempted to keep them taped a few more just in case, especially with it being your big toe (you move it every time you walk really). Would have thought it would be more comfortable to be taped also. You should be ok without taping by weekend though but still take it fairly easy after that. Did you Ice it initially??

Cheers Gareth,

I have it untaped today and I'm in less overall pain TBH. I'll proabbly tape it tonight though. I spend most of the day sitting at my desk so won't be walking on it too much.

Didn't ice it initially but have been drinking loads of milk!

For speedy healing, you really need to have your toe taped to your eyelid. Don't forget to post up some pics, so I can tell you if you've done it correctly.

Would it also help if I put a loaf of bread on my head?
