RedM
I have a huge squeak from my rear drivers side and also the front knocks under braking on even sufaces. I'm going to replace the whole lot but what should I buy. I have the yellow Bilsteins BTW. Should I stick with these or change to something like Tein (super streets)? I won't be doing trackdays so I need a good set-up for ordinary driving (plus the occasional spirited burst) and I'm unsure about having her lowered as we can only just get onto our drive as it is and slowly at that. Maybe the front could come down a little for cosmetic reasons. Also, is there anything which should be replaced at the same time that I maybe wouldn't think of? Thanks,
Ian W
as above, i also get a knock and am thinking about replacing the suspension components. was just thinking of shocks and springs (also have the yellow bilsteins at the mo) but am open to suggestions. similar to RedM, not that interested in it being lower or track use. thanks for your help guys. colsoop
Chris wilson's suspension set up is supposed to be a good combo, have a search as somebody did a write up on how they found it.
Ian W
totally agree colsoop, i've had excellent reports about CW's setup but i just can't afford to spend that much on it.
RedM
The CW set-up does sound like the dogs danglies but it's out of my price range too.
Nic
Martin, the Bilstein dampers and Tein Super Street coilovers are both good choices. The Bilsteins are the cheaper option, but with the Tein's you get the height adjustable springs. Before ordering the new suspension, I would get all the bushes and joints thoroughly checked for wear/play, by someone who knows what they are doing. I can get OEM parts and Japanese branded suspension at very good prices here, email me if you need any details.
RedM
Cheers Nic. I'm going to get her looked at. If I can find someone.
Ian W
same here....have had a mechanic take a look at it but i dunno if he actually REALLY knew what he was talking about. usually deals with scoobies and skylines
Guest KARacing
I think the shocks are leaking. I had the same problem with my previous Supra
garetheves
You've seen mine havent you Martin. Ive got Koni shocks all round with Whiteline lowering springs. The konis i think you can get for around 140 each and a decent sent of Eibach lowering springs arent much. Make it look much lower, wont detract from the handling too much and not too firm for the silky smooth UK roads.
RedM
I probably can't get any noticeably lower because of my drive. I can grind the front at stock susp. settings if I go any faster than dead slow with my foot on the brake. Probably not worth the money for the amount of lowering I could get away with. I'd say 10mm at the very most.
ellis
Chris's set up is the mutts and is fantastic value as Chris also spends considerable time setting up the geometry too and, more importantly, he cares about doing a great job! Bear that in mind - most people just slap the kit in and let you loose, happy to take your cash and thats it.
RedM
Still can't afford it though.
Ian W
know what you mean Martin, and even if i could afford it i'd still have the trip from Inverness down to see Chris and back!!
Pig
What sort of price are we talking for the CW set up? including fitting.
Ian W
i believe Chris won't actually give out a price since each car is of course, completely different in terms of the labour required when removing the older components. seem to remember someone saying that it was ~£1200? hopefully the man himself will be able to confirm if that's correct or not. bignum
i upgraded my uk suspension to kyb agx shocks, which have 4 settings and some standard j spec springs because i didnt wants to go lower,im very pleased with the setup.
Chris Wilson
Usually 1250 UK pounds, unless something is really seized and suspension components need replacing. If the MKIV is lowered more than about 18 mm at the front and 10 / 15 mm at the rear the handling goes totally to pot, do not lower much at all if you value handling! Chiefgroover
so its actually available at last, was gonna go for this but never heard from Chris again. To have shocks/springs that are suited to my local shyte roads rather than the autobahn would be very nice. Most jap kits seem over sprung, and can find rattles and squeaks in every part of your motor. eeewwww.
Ian W
just out of curiosity Chris, what d'you reckon is the best setup besides your own? (stock setup?) cheers

Sorry if I didn't return a mail, it wasn't a PM was it? I am BAD with PM's as i can't collate them or keep track of them properly. Same reason i have text turned off on my phone. Chris Wilson
just out of curiosity Chris, what d'you reckon is the best setup besides your own? (stock setup?) cheers J-Spec set up with Toyota licencsed Bilsteins is best stock set up. i have yet to try / test a set up on Jap sourced aftermarket dampers that's anything but hopeless. Jap OE stuff, on the other hand, is quite good, as demanded by modern motorists and warranty issues. Aftermarket needs to be Scandinavian or UK made. Every serious race car uses stuff from those regions, which speaks volumes for aftermarket road car sourcing, too.
