Experience with torn 'O' rings?

How's that for a thread title? Nudge-nudge, etc.

OK, it's possible that an O ring failure on injector 6 has caused some engine damage.

Those of you who have any experience with torn O rings (stop it!) on injectors, can you tell me how damage typically occurs? Ian and DB have already commented that it's hard to damage them on removal.

What I would like to know is whether they ever just spontaneously fail. To me, the ring doesn't seem perished. The split one still feels elastic - it's just got a huge tear in it.

I'm trying to establish if the rings could have failed for reasons other than during fitment. Given that the injectors were refitted just a few weeks before, I have to question whether there is a connection, though there's no blame game at this point.

O-rings very rarely fail for any reason, apart from poor fitting. Thats assuming they are the correct type for the job i.e. fuel proof, or the correct temp range.

I've worked on some really old aircraft (50+yrs) and they do break down with age. Even so they dont seem to fail untill they are disturbed, when this happens you can clearly see the compound has broken down.
