Adam Kindness
When in reverse and at full lock the is the ocaisional 'knock' Any suggestions? CVs? seems to be the driver side...
matt
The soop is RWD ...... no CV joints up front!! Have a search on mkiv.com for front end popping noise. Its in the tech articles. An engine mount has been known to cause a similar noise ........ apparently
Guest Martin F
Yep as Matt says it could be the adjustment bolts as they need to be torqued to 172lb\ft or something similar. Also check ball joints and condition of the front wishbone bushes.

Paul Whiffin
Its most probably the lower arm bolts lose, I tightened them up on mine and the noise went away. I then had a 4 wheel alignment done as well to make sure it hadn't gone out of adjustment and it had, worth getting done definately. If not the engine mounts are apparently a cause of it. Try the lower arm bolts first though, in fact torque all of them while your under there. Paul
Phil Wall
Paul could you post torque settings please, or point us to where we can pick them up.
Paul Whiffin
Erm, where the hell did I see it. Think it was www.mkiv.com somewhere, can't remember exactly now sorry. Let me know if it fixes the problem.
Steve Cargill
Mine has started creaking recently. Most noticable when creeping and braking at the same time. Thought it was the brakes, so took the opportunity to replace the pads - turned out they were OK. The creaking is still there. I get it when manuvering as well, when not touching the brakes. Sounds like a creaky door!!! Had a look on MKIV.COM and it doesn't have those sections of the manual there.
Paul Whiffin
Exactly the same symptons I used to get, tighten those bolts up and the noise will go away. It can also be caused by fluid leaks on to your engine mounts.

Steve That is exactly what i had - check them quick !! I left mine for months, lost two front tyres due to the bolts being loose on the lower wishbone. Had 4 wheel align afterward, then after about 1month creak started again, found the wishbone brace ? that stops it moving backwards had come loose, tightened with a spanner stopped again. THEN few weeks later it has started again... So torquing up is priority, also put a cut washer in to to help. Dean.
Steve Cargill
Assuming it ever stops raining I'll go out tomorrow and check all is tight. No idea about torque settings yet, but if it's loose it's loose!!! As I remember Dean, your's were hanging out, wern't they? DArby
Yep, i'd left it for about 6months first time , and they were very very loose. This time just the tie bar was loose... You need to get the wheel off, and right under the car to see the suspension arms etc. Dean.
Steve Cargill
Not having the torque settings, I've just been out and had a look. I checked everything I could get a socket on pretty much (except for those with split pins). On one side I tightned the nut on the lower front inner mounting, that moved quite easily about 1/8 of a turn. On the other side the plate where the lower rear inner mount bolts onto the underside of the car, those bolts were nipped up a bit. Still creaking... have to try and locate the torque settings and have another go Found it!!! http://www.mkiv.com/manual/manualtt/shock_replacement/ss-1.jpg (Edited by Steve Cargill at 4:29 pm on Feb. 1, 2002)

Adam Kindness
righto had the drivers side wheel off (sounds feels like it coming from there) There was one nut missing and all but the locking nut were finger tight (looks like some radge has had a go at them) Still caried on looking for the prob tho... I couldnt find any loose bolts around the susp arm! Which bolt is normally the culprit? Couldnt get the psgr side wheel off..... need an extending wrench or some spinach

The ones with the cam adjusters on them. Should be easy to spot as they are at the engine end of the lower wishbone. It's unlikely that you will see that they are lose as they should be torqued to something in the order of 170ft\lb.
Adam Kindness
not too worry.... its going in to the importers i got it from on tuesday! Seeing about the knocking, fuel stink and possible brake disc skimming
