TrickTT
14mm socket and long(at least 2 foot) wobble bar from underneath. Use 3/8th drive preferably with a ratchet.
Jake
Exactly what trick152 said. It's a fairly easy job if you've got the car off the ground on axle stands or preferably a ramp.

TrickTT
Undo the five sided cover ( carefully, its got a spring inside). The two kits you have correspond to the contacts on either side of the solenoid. Take the old ones off carefully, noting the order of the bits, then replace with new. Clean the copper ring on the plunger carefully with a file (i used the wifes metal nail file - she was not happy - but it works), then put it all back together. Branners
once its back in and working can you post up the details of the exact part numbers you ordered from Toyota as Phoenix arent sure if the 2 part numbers I have them will be sufficient to refurb it all. thanks JB
SUPRALOOPY
this sorted it for me... 28226-74070 28226-22050 all about 15 quid all in:D better than a new starter as they tried to sell me £400ish
Branners
Phoenix said those two parts may not be enough, I gave them the part numbers and everything. The car is due with them some time this week so lets see what happens. JB

JB cos i was told i needed a new starter. but the car would start after a bit of clicking..when i took the starter apart it was obvious what was causing the problem..so if your car clicks when cold then starts the starter is ok imo and its just the contacts..when i took mine apart you could see that one of the contacts was worn out, there was a big groove in the contact plate and the throw part was all dirty. Branners
mine just clicks and wont start at all not matter what I do. The car has 130,000 on it so its highly likely that its shot but will let Phoenix take a look later this week. JB

I used it over the weekend and it's worked a treat and my car sounded exactly the same as yours .. except it would fire every now and then. Just like to say a big thanks to Supraloopy for the solution
Branners
yes, those parts did fix the problem. Phoenix did all the work on it for me so I obviously had to pay labour as well but it seems a bargain compared to using a new or recon starter. Thanks for the part numbers people, saved me a fortune. Jive
Out of curiosity, how much did they charge you to do that job? Roughly if you don't want to commit to it
Branners
not sure if it was a special price but it was 1.5 hours worth of labour and £13 worth of parts. Total bill was £76. JB
Jive
Cool, probably took us about 1.5 hours as well, although 1 hour was spent getting the top bolt off Cost me £18 so well worth it and you've got a bargain as well
