jackso11
The garage I cought the car from gave me a new set of tyres in the deal (3 weeks ago). I have only just noticed that they put 225's on all round! I only have standard 16"s and was wondering if this is a problem, of course the back tyres SHOULD be wider. Will this cause any problems? tbourner
On a TT 225s will be dangerous! What make of tyre? That's also important.
chilli
Well they are ok at the front presumably but too narrow for the back! I'm suprised they fit ok on the back, arn't they wider J wheels anyway?
Faye
Although an NA, my car came with 225's all round (the wheels were all the same size too). I didn't actually notice any problems at the time, although when I changed to 18s and 265 at the rear the car felt a whole lot better.
Lazarus
I believe DaveF's car had the smaller wheels and tyres on all round originally as well, also an Na.
TLicense
My 1993 TT GZ came with same width 16" rims all round. I ran with 225's all round for a while. Then I went 225 front 235 rear, and now IIRC I have 235 front and 275 rears on my 18"x8" rims.
chilli
and now IIRC I have 235 front and 275 rears on my 18"x8" rims. Same size tyres as mine then, I'm sure my rear wheels are like 10j or something, you sure you have just 8j all round, with 275s on them at the back? I imagine it must be well hard to get the power down with 225s at the rear!
tbourner
245s front and 285s rear now! No more wheelspinning at 110!!!
jackso11
My car is an n/a, so am I ok with these tyres? I think the wheels are wider at the back...amI at risk of the tyres coming off? should I go back to the garage? They are Falkens by the way
Chris Wilson
I have driven several MKIV's set up like this, and I quite like them! Whilst not factory, and possibly not even legal, I feel many modern cars are over tyred for styling reasons. A MKIV with the tyre combination you cite is quite nice to slide around and very predictable. This does NOT mean I recommend it, just a personal take on the matter! paul_k
look below the drivers door lock for a white label. On mine it clearly says 225 front 245 rear. Paul
Ewen
If it were my car, I would make the garage aware that whilst they are generous in putting new rubber on the car, I would prefer that they provide tyres as per Toyotas original size spec. The Supra dynamics are well sorted straight out of the crate, and they obviously put a lot of R & D into the tyres and suspension. Add to this the insurance side as to not having manufacturers reccommended size tyres fitted. Im no expert but theres a reason why the Japanese street racers and drift fraternity prefer narrower tyres than originally fitted, its easier to make the back end lose grip and spin up round corners.....good if you want this to happen and like some guys here have the skill to do it, not good in a Supra if you dont want this to happen. I know its only another 20mm or so but I feel safer with a wider footprint putting the power down.
