carl0s
http://www.sam-e.co.uk/cartier/1.JPG http://www.sam-e.co.uk/cartier/2.JPG http://www.sam-e.co.uk/cartier/3.JPG Been asked how much I'll pay for this watch, by someone who could best be described as a bit rum. It's a Cartier Tank Americaine, or American Tank, gents model. The curious thing is, it appears to be made of stainless steel, while I can only find information on the real mccoy being made out of 18k white gold, and hence retailing for £15k. What's got me though is that the quality is astounding. It passes the feel-factor with flying colours. Some concerning things though: It says Stainless on the strap, and doesn't look like white gold to me, although I don't know what white gold looks like The blue jewel from the crown is missing, and has obviously fallen out at some time. the date window seems to very slightly cut off the numerals below it (the VI numeral) The backing plate doesn't seem to be fixed flush. Looks as though the battery has been replaced not so professionally Now, if this is a replica, then I have to say it's well worth a couple of hundred quid just on feel-factor alone, and I'll be looking out for replica roadster-chronos at that sort of price. What do ya think?
Ian W
I wouldn't say it'll be worth more than a few hundred even if it's real mate. The case and bracelet look scratched to hell, needs a new crown and probably a good service. don't think it looks too disimilar to some cheapo DKNY or similar IMHO
carl0s
it's not so scratched really. You try taking a photo of a watch up close with a flash.. it'll always look really bad! You're right about the looks, very similar. Nice clasp though and if it was real, it'd be worth ~£15,

Supralookin
Jesus, we all know you have a Dell widescreen monitor. Can you fit them even on yours?! And white gold looks like my thumb ring I wear ;-)

Ian W
aye, it'd be worth ~£15k if it was white gold and brand new. that certainly looks stainless to me and if that makes it a fake too then you're looking at £100 max.
carl0s
see if it pulls a magnet well, it was only gently magnetic, and that's with a super strong hard-disk magnet. Oh well, I gave it back anyway. So.. where can I find these good quality replicas then?
carl0s
Jesus, we all know you have a Dell widescreen monitor. Can you fit them even on yours?! erm yeah, they're a perfect fit. My screen is 1680px wide, so there's a little bit of room to spare
carl0s
You can't tell from the photos, but the brushed-metal parts are perfect, which is where most fakes fall down. They tend to have a loose cheap feel and are shiny all over. On this watch, the centre-links and edges of the bracelet is brushed.
Kip
Look for the serial number on the case!!! If it is a fake it's worthless! I put this to you, would you buy a Supra that has a chevy engine and parts manufactured by Joe in his shed in the USA? But, it looks like a real one??? Save and buy the real thing I say, then you will have the true feel factor. Buy a second hand one if needs be, without the scratches and defects that the one pictured has. As you may be able to tell I have a real problem with fake stuff.

JohnA
...enter checking valves with a magnet.... If you've ever dropped a stainless bolt down an oilgallery (engine in one piece) you'd have learnt the lesson lol (try fishing it out without a magnet, brrrrr....) Guest KARacing
So.. where can I find these good quality replicas then? Maybe you can find some of these watches in London Chinatown or get some from here when you come. All made in China
carl0s
I found a site offering reasonable quality 'replicas', but check out the prices!!! http://www.glamourreplica.com/submariner.htm
JohnA
Original replicas --- or is it genuine fakes? Only the best...
TLicense
Everything's magnetic... Just some things more so than others! Even people are magnetic. You just needed a stronger magnet John. I worked on the worlds first 10 Tesla MRI machine. Now that was a STRONG magnet.
