SuperSupra
Hi, dumb ass question here but i don't suppose anyone has any pics of J-spec brakes compared to UK brakes (discs and calipers front and back). I just assumed I had J-spec brakes but someone said to me the other day "how much did the UK brakes cost?" So now I'm confused! What's the difference in appearance? SuperSupra
Hmmm, looks quite similar, but I'll get a pic when I get home from work and post it here. Cheers for that SupRo.
SuperSupra
Don't know if this is good enough to tell, but this is my front. Don't know if you can tell without seein them properly! Here's a link to a pic: http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rhcpjohn/detail?.dir=696c&.dnm=e14d.jpg&.src=ph They are the smaller jap spec 2 pot fronts, time for an upgrade
Jake
JSpec. The decals may have confused the person who thought they were Uk ones.
Steve W
It LOOKS like a Jap caliper that someone has painted the Supra Logo on BUT, could be wrong, the pics a little dark !?
SuperSupra
Hmmm, that would explain it then! SO....upgrade to UK brakes then eh, how much am I looking at all round? Obviously worth it from what everyone has been saying!
Steve W
The difference is: the Jap caliper has 2 pistons on ONE side and 2 Sliders to pull the caliper across, the UK has FOUR pistons and doesn't 'slide' it presses from both sides, which is generally considered 'better' as it centralises the disc/caliper AND probably gives more brake force anyway. so the UK caliper looks ONE PIECE, the jap has the 'slider' round the edge (same on REARS too but either ONE piston-Jap or TWO piston-UK).... Steve W
Having said that i don't find the Jap brakes THAT bad.... just that the UK's are VERY good (if you see what i mean ?!?!? ) FatS.
Nic
Hmmm, that would explain it then! SO....upgrade to UK brakes then eh, how much am I looking at all round? Obviously worth it from what everyone has been saying! I can get you front and rear calipers for £330 a pair including delivery, which is a big saving over Toyota UK prices. Best to get stock discs there (they are very heavy/expensive to post from here). Speak to Chris Wilson about a set of fast road pads and Motul brake fluid. I'm also able to supply TRD braided brake lines too if needed (these are optional).

Steve W
OH, sorry, that's the OBVIOUS difference.. the UK discs are ALL bigger diameter too, just less obvious on their OWN. (the UK front discs are SIDED as per that pic... they are spiralled inside to give 'active' cooling by actually FORCING air into the disc... the Jap discs are just like most NORMAL cars and have simpler non-sided radial finning inside)
SuperSupra
Ok so all in all, it's a very worthwhile mod, although a tad on the costly side. I have to say the brakes I find to be more than adequate for the time being, but certainly at the start of next year it's something I'll no doubt be doing. Cheers for the info guys, appreciate it. Jake
(the UK front discs are SIDED as per that pic... they are spiralled inside to give 'active' cooling by actually FORCING air into the disc The arrows on that picture you posted make it look like the air is drawn out from the disc rather than forced in. I wonder which is correct... It looks to me like the air would go inwards but the diagram seems to suggest otherwise. (Physics was never my thang though)
SuperSupra
The extent of my technical knowledge about brakes:- Car goes, middle pedal makes car stop, push harder - stop quicker...
Nic
Definitely one of the best mods you can do, I gaurantee you will be impressed with the braking power of the larger brakes. The brakes are actually very good value for money when compared to the price of a branded aftermarket set, which will cost you 4 times the price. Here are a few pics of the front brakes, forgot to mention you will also need Shim and Fitting Kit (I can supply for £20 delivered) shown in photo below. Need4Speed
Toyota have recently reduced the UK disc prices. I bought some 2 weeks ago and they were cheaper than 3 years ago. UK front discs are now cheaper than J-spec back discs!! Ventilated discs cool by the air going from the centre of the disc to to edge. Porterfield pads are very good; you can get them from Whifbitz and Envy etc.
Nic
More pics of the larger spec front and rear brake kits (plus assosiated parts) can be seen [thread=51053]HERE[/thread]
