Scoboblio
Right, before I start off I want to say that I'm NOT trying to start another "which petrol is best" debate (don't know why, since the Auto vs Manual has made it's quarterly appearance, so we might as well get this one out of the way too before xmas lol). For the last 8 months or so I've filled up with nothing but Shell Optimax, stuck to it religiously. When I first bought the car there was no smoke on startup - nothing at all. Since then I've been getting a slight puff of blue smoke when starting up for the first time in the morning. Lately with the colder weather this has developed into a small cloud, which has got me considering replacing the stem seals. However two days ago I filled up with BP ultimate because I had no other choice. I've nearly used this tank up now, and I've just been out and started the car..... no smoke at all I'm going to stick with ultimate for a few more fill-ups to see if this was just a one off.... but worth finding out if anyone else has experienced this! Soop Dogg
I'm planning on replacing the stem seals for the same reason. I'll try this first though! I'll let you know what happens.
markrzs
Mmmm interesting I'm sure were all be looking at our exhaust on start up now ! I will.

Scoboblio
2nd fill up with ultimate will be tonight so I'll see how it behaves on start-up tomorrow morning.... if it's still as clean as it was today I'm seriously looking into what is causing this. Scoboblio
Stop lookin and DRIVE sometimes mine does sometimes it doesnt So I should ignore the plumes of blue smoke previously coming from my exhaust at startup? Right, second fill with BP ultimate last night. This morning I had the expected condensation for a cold morning, but absolutely no blue smoke at all and no nasty smell. This is not my imagination. The blue smoke had been getting consistently worse over the last few months and would happen at EVERY cold start after the car had been left for about 8 hours or so - now it's gone completely. Ian C
So, next step is to think why changing petrol could instantly stop the oil burning taking place...? -Ian
Soop Dogg
So, next step is to think why changing petrol could instantly stop the oil burning taking place...? -Ian Yeah, the valve stem seals are bloating into gelatinous blobs. They'll fall apart in a few days now! (joking, hopefully!)

Ian C
I have no idea mate. Unless it's immediately gummed up the valve steams in some fashion, which is somewhat implausible. -Ian
Scoboblio
Hmmmm maybe the bloke at the shell garage has been cutting it with cooking fat or something
