Steve Gee Posted June 6, 2003 Share Posted June 6, 2003 I keep meaning to post this question! As mentioned in another thread, I regularly perform my own oil changes. I have a TT with air con and cruise control, which makes the engine bay pretty cluttered. The question is, HOW DO YOU GET THE OLD FILTER OFF AND NEW ONE IN?!?!?!?!?!? The way I have to do it, is take the nearside front wheel off, unscrew the filter (eventually!), put my finger in the feed hole and gently lower it to near the steering arm and carefully balance it. Then get under the car, reach up through the gap between engine and sump guard and slowly extract the filter. You can guess how many times I've knocked it over and what the state of my drive is like!! Getting the new one in is even more fun. Put it through the gap, balance it, go back up to the top of the engine, reach down, hook my finger in the feed hole and lift it up into position!!!! Is this really how it's done? Thorin Posted June 6, 2003 Share Posted June 6, 2003 Carrier bag around the bottom of the filter then when you've unscrewed it you can just let it drop into the bag! I'm told if you have small hands you can just about get to it from above but think you have to remove battery and power steering tank out of the way? Steve W Posted June 6, 2003 Share Posted June 6, 2003 Borrow 4-poster ramp for 20 minutes (mind you, even THAT'S NOT taking off the under'tray' thingy!) from underneath there IS a direct 'reach-up' route thru all the gubbins (even with my arms:p ) (PLUS, you can do a quick auto' change / manual level check and general looksee:thumbs: ) WODJA MEAN, YOU HAVEN'T GOT A 4-POSTER IN YER GARAGE ? lovatt Posted June 6, 2003 Share Posted June 6, 2003 i used the carrier bag trick at the weekend but the bloody thing had little anti suffocate holes in it and the oil went everywhere i took the PS tank off and could get to the filter easy and im no midget ! Need4Speed Posted June 6, 2003 Share Posted June 6, 2003 1. Put car on stands 2. Remove undertray 3. Remove oil filter with strap-type socket tool 4. Fit new oil filter by hand 5. Wipe up small amount of spillage Once you've done it, it's easier the next time, but it's never really easy. Presumably a Japanese robot in the factory has no trouble fitting them to start with. I put rag over the NS rear engine mount to catch the small amount of spill.
