It's typical Americanism I'm afraid. 'Spinners' were originally an English invention for racing; they were used on the INSIDE or the wheel, to help with brake cooling during the slower parts of the track (before vented discs etc.), but some American said "hey, lets take those puppies, make them all shiny and bling, and stick them on the OUTSIDE of the wheel! Yeah!

I'm surprised they haven't released a set of Burbery spinners yet...:eow:

thats cool!

Didn't know that myself but whilst watching the last F1 race I said to my dad "why don't teams invent fans or angled alloy wheel spokes on the inside of the wheels to help cool brakes".

Of course, we both dismissed the idea as stupid.

NOT ANYMORE

The wheels do play an important role in ducting heat from the brakes in F1...but moving aero aids are banned...having fans near brake discs is banned. I'm guessing the wheels are designed to work with airflow as much as is possible.

thanks Alex.

I'm surprised the ideas not used on sports car like Mclaren's.

I remeber seeing a Swedish super car (may have been a Koenigsegg)

that had alloys which looked like turbine blades from a jet engine.

Maybe that was a similar concept
