Sub_Culture
As above!........ I think the Supe looks awesome without the spoiler, but I dont want to suffer any handling/downforce loss. Would I incur any problems if I removed the standard spoiler and flushed it over? TIA Andy
chilli
It does! it's not just for show. I read somewhere it offers something like 66lbs of downforce at 70mph - or something like that anyway - point being it does offer downforce and hence more grip. I doubt it going to be a show stopper if you remove it though TBH but it might make a difference at high speed cornering... (personally I think spoilerless supras look blergh lol)
imi
While the supra isnt a track car, I still believe that most of the features are designed for performance and not just for show. Air Filter, SMIC being classic examples......
chilli
totally agree, it seems pretty much everything on the supra is functional and designed to perform well, they put a lot of effort in thats for sure...
Class One
I read somewhere here as well that the spoiler offers stability during braking from high speeds. Its there for a purpose, not for show!
SimonB
It doesn't provide downforce as such, but it does reduce lift at speed. Aparently anyway!
Chiefgroover
I read somewhere that you get 12 stone of downforce @ 80mph. doesn't sound that unreasonable for a big spoiler?
Matt T
It doesn't provide downforce as such, but it does reduce lift at speed. Aparently anyway! Produces downforce as to reduce lift maybe?
Chris Wilson
I have driven planty of Supras with no rear "wing", it makes little difference. Maybe kills some lift from the tear drop roof shape, but compared to a proper wing section as would be fitted to a GT type race car it's much more style than substance, i doubt you'd notice it was gone. I too much prefer them with no rear wing at all.
chilli
I should think if you were going flat out, say at 180mph the downforce would be quite considerable. However mostly when going at crazy speeds we all do it in straight lines (most of the time). Mr T had to make a trade off between downforce, mpg and top speed and so I should imagine the spoiler is on the subtle side of things, not overkill... not convinced by the spoilerless car, looks kinda naked and missing something, personal tastes though, no right answer here
Ian C
Terry S ran just over 180mph with and without a rear spoiler at TOTB4 and noticed no difference. I like how they look.
eyefi
im spoilerless and have no problems at full/high speed under any conditions. the wing reduces the coefficient of body lift, it does not produce 12 stone (170lbs) of downforce at 80mph. the spoiler was an option in japan. i much prefer the clean look of no spoiler. Mike
I read somewhere here as well that the spoiler offers stability during braking from high speeds. Its there for a purpose, not for show! I heard that too.... no benefit for speed, but designed to keep it in a straight line when braking...
CJ
During the winter the Orange Beast is having a makeover and I may be ditching the rear spoiler too.
Mad Matt
It does! it's not just for show. I read somewhere it offers something like 66lbs of downforce at 70mph - or something like that anyway Supra Tech Manual! 66lbs of downforce at 70 mph! Plus, it's hollow to, to save weight! Just like the carpet fibres too!
lust2luv
Does that mean it offers 264lb of downforce at 140mph? And 436lb at 180mph? Or are these things linear?
AJI
take a look at the lift equation to see how any aerofoil works: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/lifteq.html Any extra downforce (or the effect it has on reducing natural profile lift from the car's shape) is always a good safety factor when it comes to driving at high speed. It results in more stability. You may not noticed the difference going in a straight line but take like for like going round a corner I'd say a Supra with a rear spoiler would have more grip on the rear end. silvasurfa
I liked the look of it without a spoiler and intended to go that way, however when I bought mine I changed my mind!!! Either way they look better than a corsa!!!
