merckx
Are they a good thing? I wouldn't want any tiny bits of metal attaching themselves to the sump plug then coming loose in one lump and floating around in the oil.
Robert
hmmm good point could be the reason they are hard to find over here now
michael parker
They're used quite extensively on aircraft, known as magplugs, they obviously make you aware of any breakdown of internal components. They are placed in various stages of the engine. Just re read about the big clumps, i can't imagine that would happen. The stresses of an aircrafts engine @ 22000lbs of thrust barely leaves any shavings on a magplug, so i doubt the soops engine would!

terawua
Cant you just magnetise a standard sump plug by sticking it in a strong electromagnetc field (MRI scanner at work springs to mind on second thoughts....) - or did I misconstrue my physics lessons? We could...if we all had access to a strong electromagnetic field such as a MRI scanner. There aren't too many available down where I live
Terminator
I got one of these from a guy on ebay, it was well made. I dont know if the stock sump plug is ferrous. I could never understand why Toyota never put them in as stock, as they do in the diff, Or at least the two I have pulled apart have had magnetic drain plugs. If anyone spots any please let me know as I want a few more for some engine builds.
