very P*&ed off with my car

OK, so ive had my new clutch setup in my car for 2 weeks now and I have to admit it, I hate it.

 

The ferdanza flywheel makes the car sound like an old tracktor,, not at all cool, everyone looks at you at the lights and I know what they are thinking!

 

the clutch, an RPS Stage 3 (MAX Series) 6 Puck Sprung Hub Clutch , what more do I need to say.. Hard work I think it might make my car shake to pieces! 3 times more peddal pressure....

 

I have never spent so much money on something I have disliked so much! I am going to change it to something else but dont want to ,,, or cant afford to get it wrong again!

 

This has been the worst investment I ever made and I feel I am just going to have to write it off.

 

Terry, I know what you mean now ! Same setup, same problems.

 

Raoul, I think you will be ok because of the clutch plate you ended up with.

 

For all others out there thinking about doing this upgrade I would think very seriously about what you are letting yourself in for. A £1000 lesson in what not to do .

Thanks for sharing the results with us, it's a shame but sometimes you try stuff and it's rubbish. At least you aren't going to live with it just because you paid for it, and you've potentially saved other people on the BBS from going through the same problems.

 

You should be able to sell the bits on to get some cash back?

An interesting topic. I have to say I was in this boat when I got my car in december. I bought it with a slipping clutch, and the dealer said they would sort me out with a free clutch. By the time I got it, the slip was so bad I had smoked and glazed the flywheel, and so I had to have it faced (which I know u arent supposed to do- but I made sure all the holes were filled up to stop swarf going in them on the dual mass flywheel).

 

Anyway- I waned to upgrade my clutch next time I replace, but I am a little worried now about what to do. Maybe Chris Wilson can shed some light on things, cos as the moment I am thinking it might be just as well to save up for the TRD twin plate clutch kit - comes with all the shenanigins to put it on, and at least its toyota genuine.

 

Thanks for the advice, but remember TRD3000 man - you can hold some serious horsepower with that setup - maybe you just need 600 crank HP to make it worthwhile!

I tore my hair out deciding which clutch to go with on my car and I was really worried about whether I'd be able to drive it after it was fitted. I went for a full-face Kevlar disc, and a slightly stiffer sprung plate (about 30% I think). It turns out it was the right choice! The car drives just like it did on the stock clutch apart from the pedal is a little stiffer. Should hold about 60% more power than the standard clutch as well. It was a Clutchmasters Stage Three, they may well do a comparable setup for the MkIV.

 

No point going for a "bigger" clutch than you really need, you'll end up compromising your enjoyment of the car unneccessarily. From what I've heard on here the MkIV standard clutch can take a fair bit of extra power before causing problems.

Chris, you should have gone for the Kevlar Dual Friction mate. It's not the end of the world though. Leon should be able to get a clutch plate made that will work with the RPS pressure plate, so the whole thing is not junk. I have this set up as does Eyefi I believe & it's not too bad. I had an RPS 6 puck before that was noisey.

 

Alternatively, just change back to a stock flywheel.

 

BTW it is a sprung disc isn't it??

The TRD twin plate will be as noisey if not worse.

Hi,

 

Don't know if it's any help to anyone but the HKS twin plates have come on remarkably in the last year. The latest 'GD Pro' range really are pussycats to live with. They have this funky sprin-thing going on which not only keeps the plates under tension whilst dis-engaged (so they don't rattle) but they also engage the plates sequentially so you don't get the 'grab' usually associated with multiplates.

 

Believe me, I used to hate multiplates with a vengeance but now I'd happily live with the HKS one.

 

Not trying the hard sell but if anyone wanted first-hand experience then give me your email and I will let you know when we have fitted the one we are doing in a few months. You are welcome to come down and I'll put you in the driving seat so you can feel the pedal pressure too. There will be some cheesewire round your throat to make sure you don't drive off...:)

IMHO decent power with little noise would be a Kevlar Dual Friction, with a new stock flywheel. This will hold 600 bhp & still be slippable. The stock flywheels go bad over time hence me saying a new stock. I love LW flywheels but there is a noise penalty.

 

Nathan, how much power will those new twin plates hold?

Oh dear!

Sorry to hear you've given up the ghost on the setup. Did you try raising the idle to 1000-1200RPM? For what its worth, the noise is really the price one pays for the priveledge(?) of a more responsive engine. For most it will not be worth it. I myself view it as a compromise I can live with though I have yet to live it. Having spoken at length to TerryS and trawled Supraforums, I am quite prepared for the noise and the increased pedal effort. Indeed, the rattling noise didn't actually seem that bad. It seems the general concensus (Supraforums) is around 1000miles break in for this type of clutch when it becomes much more user-friendly, so you are not even close.

 

I would be inclined to say stick with it for now. At least until you have run it in. Not alot one can suggest w.r.t the Fidanza apart from raising the idle a tad.

What sort of power are you running? My Max series RPS using a bog standard Toyota centre plate was fine up to around 550bhp, drove like a std clutch apart from a slightly heavier pedal, if I were you I'd go for that set up. I've recently changed to a 6 puck sprung plate which was a nightmare to start with, much better now its bedded in a bit though.

Chris, it was the SB Leon was on about not the RPS. As I said on the phone they do get better ( bite wise).

 

Leon is going to bang a mail off tonight to get a time/cost on a new dual friction to match your RPS pressure plate.
