mos
Hi all just thought id post to let you know what happened to me last weekend, during my usual under bonnet checks (about a week before) i noticed a little water in my pan and the alternator looked a little damp, strange i thought, cant see a leak. So i thought it might be a split hose but no water was leaking when the car was running and at temp. The radiator had gone down but monitored it and it didnt drop again. Untill i was on the dyno on mon morn then the pp went big time and started spraying water out of the drain hole all over my alternator. NOT NICE!. Anyway its a bugger to change (timing belt needs removing) but the new one has a pipe on it to attach a hose so that if/when it does go it drains out to the pan and not over the alternator. I had a look at my old one and its just a hole so nothing can be done about where the water goes. Just be aware that water in that area could mean your pp,s about to go, im just glad i wasnt on the m6 trying to get faster than time. Also my temp gauge didnt really show any increase as the water was spraying out but we shut down darn quick so it might have done, but couldnt say if it would have prevented serious damage

Steve W
I made sure I changed mine when the Timing-Belt was done... I'd read on Supraforums etc. that the Pump was a fairly common thing to fail (not OVERLY bad, just the worst thing on Soop). As it happens, the old one looked good, but we changed it anyway.. you can't really tell by looking how long the seal/bearing has left, and you're right, it's a nightmare to change ! ! ! AND, you're right again, I've noticed on various cars we've changed pumps on that some makes of pump just have the tell-tale hole, and some have a stubby pipe to let you put a 'divert' pipe on... far more sensible (as long as you DON'T block the divert hose with a plug ! ! ! = defeats it's point !) [i also changed the Tensioner - but have NOT heard of any/many failures...... just VERY cautious...... alright cowardly ! ]
