mr keef
Ello everyone..recently i have installed a front mount intercooler,as my side mount had seen better days.now i have double decat with restrictor ring and on my old cooler i was getting 15 psi,now since fitting the front mount im only getting 10 psi,but the car feels quicker at 10psi than it did at 15 on my old cooler.I dont have a bleed valve and there seems to be no air leaks anywhere, did this happen to anyone else,is it because the air is now cooler because of the frontmount? cheers keef:shrug:
adi2009
I think fitting a FMIC does cause a slight pressure drop but dont think it should be anything like what u are seeing. My car boosts to 10 psi with FMIC but i am not decatted.
mr keef
everything seems to be in order,i'll get a boost controller, turn her up see what happens
tbourner
You're not measuring it in some weird place are you?
mr keef
You're not measuring it in some weird place are you? naa mate all installed ages ago via the http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/boostguage/bg.htm spoke to a local tuner and he seemed to think its normal,he said if the standard cooler was'nt doing the job properly, and i fitted a big front mount with 3 inch pipes, then he would expect to see this kinda drop, checked everything over again and it all seems well. Guys were saying that their boost pressure had increased after removing the stock SMIC and fitting a new front mounted one.

darren j adams
What make and size is the front mount? D.
mr keef
What make and size is the front mount? D. Not sure of the make but its bloody big 3 row 25"across the pipework is 3"
tDR
I wouldn't expect a pressure drop - double check all silicon connectors and jubilees. Washing up liquid and a little water is a good way to find air leaks
darren j adams
Seems strange to lose 5 psi ,thats a lot. Cheap front mounts can restrict flow if not made properly thats why i asked the make, size sounds ok. If its quicker it must be doing something right!!! Try a boost cont and turn it back up. D. darren j adams
Do you have a compressor handy? D.

Yea the car feels a lot quicker, i couldnt believe the difference,so gona get me a boost controller and see what happens
tbourner
so gona get me a boost controller and see what happens You mean like your turbos blowing up!!! If it really is a problem, surely you'll want to find the reason rather than just trying to 'boost' over it!!
darren j adams
use a compressor to test for leaks. tbourner is right ,find out why first then turn it up!!!! Then when you blow the turbos up you can go single!!! D.
terawua
well the only reason I can think of is that your boost gauge is plumbed in on the turbo side of the intercooler, and hence the lower resistance of the FMIC is resultig in less pressure on that side of the pipework.... but you would know if that was the case, as usually they are plumbed into the manifold... mr keef
if i turn the boost up a small amount then,if there were leaks, the boost gauge reading wont change,i dont honestly think i have leaks,i will know for sure when i get the boost controller. And yea if they do blow then its single time
mr keef
I know its been a while but fitted a bleed valve last week, turned the boost back up and had no problems at all, checked all the hoses pipes etc they were all fine, holds 15 psi ...just outa intrest, has anyone ran more than 15 psi on the standard tubbies?and been ok?
