Keith C
Shh, stop trying to sell him a FMIC, otherwise I won't be able to get my SMIC
Need4Speed
From memory with 60 degree F outside ambient temp and a car with boost at 1.2 bar, under full load, with a perfect stock IC I saw around 48 degrees C air at the plenum. C'mon Chris, don't mix your temperature scales:)
MONKEYmark
my egt`s have gone from a bad 1050deg`s with old stock intercooler to 900 degree`s with fmic also the titan motorsport 9 second drag car uses stock bumper with big fmic, and seen another 8+ second supra with stock bumper and fmic it also had a stock radiator too. they all tend to change to fluidyne aftermarket radiators too. http://www.titanmotorsports.com/lib/titanmotorsports/streetchamp.gif suppose prevention is a good thing its always best to try keep cooling temps down. water injection sounds good along with a fmic. the jap cars need some sort of bonnet sccop to get cool air in engine. nobody wants to see an engine go south. we need some sort of list of mods that we can do for cooling and fueling mods. i cant think of any other mods to do but cooling and fueling mods. stuff like gearbox coolers and oil coolers. what other cooling mods can you do for us? can you not get a small panel to direct air up between radiator and fmic. FaithStalker
please bear in mind that i know nothing of the technical stuff of cars, but wouldnt the temp gauge on the dash show a hot engine cos of a crap intercooler? or is that showing a different temperature????? Adam Kindness
what sort of age/mileage cars are we generally 'killing' on this site... Mine is a 94 RZ with just over 50kmiles... The SMIC is very crumbly but looks generally in good nick. A HKS S-type was on my list to get done when the turbo's went but after working out the damage to wallet after the rebuild it was out of my range....... and still is..... If the car still hasnt sold in a while and i decide to keep it.... it WILL be getting...... FMIC water Injection bigger injectors as a start... Sharpie
Checked mine today and have fins crumbling away to the touch and likes fags like JB's. She is an old bird now! 8 yrs in Aug. Which way to go ? Hmmmmmmmmmm
Steve W
Chris, I don't want one RIGHT THIS MINUTE, but, if/when I get some more cash I will NOT be fitting an FMIC so your uprated one sounds ideal ! ! I like my active spoiler THANKS:sly: AND I REALLY like a nice uninterupted flow of air to my RADIATOR..... OH YES ! ! ! (I've NEVER liked the idea of 'covering ' the radiator up ! ! ! ) Unless I blow my Soop up / go bankrupt and have to sell / 'cop-it' then you can defo put me on the 'future-buyer' list ! ! ! Thor
Chris/Dude, before you start selling these you really should publish temperature drops across the IC so these guys can get an idea of efficiency before parting with their hard earned cash. I know what the HKS R type can achieve which is darn impressive. I will also check a stock core, then if you both publish your findings we can compare. dude
Thor No probs with the figures , of course you wont mind lending me another multimeter to measure the inlet/outlet temps will you John:flame Dev
Thor
Dude you are more than welcome. I am sure you guys can see the need for data before buying these things. Either may cost half the amount of a Stock one, but it could also be less efficient.
dude
Or may knock the HKS into a cocked hat , all that HKS etc gear is a bit ricey really :p John:flame Dev
Steve W
mmmmm..... well I know Toyota made a fair job of the Soop, and, they are among the better of the Manufacturers as regarding design/performance etc, but, I doubt they bothered TOO much with the actual efficiency of the standard IC ! I bet ANYONE could copy and BETTER the original ! [ the only problem is being bothered/able to do so..... I know Chris' IC may NOT be the SUPER-FANDABBY-DOZY best item on the planet but as long as it's AS good as the original AND a lot cheaper - I haven't priced a standard one yet ? - then I'll have to go for it ] Does ANYONE make another 'standard-fit' IC for the mkIV ? ? FatS. [oh, sorry, AND EASY TO FIT "for MORONS"....... "for ME ":p ]
Dragonball
Steve - you don;t half wade in m8! Just chill a minute - and I suppose the 9 second Titan hates to cover up it's radiator too! LOL! Toyo did a great job - problem is - we keep modifying the original! And most are getting on now (as I know only too well - bit crumbly meeself!) Chris' is, I am sure, an excellent piece of kit and will provide an excellent alternative to the SMIC It will be very interesting to see what kind of figures Dudes FMIC comes up with - but having seen the core and fitting etc it's got to be a great alternative to the HKS - and will handle the extra boost with ease You pays your money... Guest Martin F
Stock SMIC is about £870+vat from Toyota. The only other aftermarket SMIC that i know of are ARC and Greddy.
Guest Usmann A
ARC INTERCOOLER are suppose to be very good, better than a HKS Type R.......(numerous places advice) Type S(smaller one)- 1200 quid Type R drag spec-massive only really big hp cars use, as 'drag spec' Temp needle never moves from the middle, even on hour long bursts....but this might not have much value until you actually test the inlet air's temprature...as Dude to show proper readings...will find out inlet temp's today from Nana, and compare with others.. Adam W
The trouble is, everyone with a big IC says "Wow it's great" and there is very little actualy data available. If you use a thermocouple to measure external air temp, temp at the the turbo exit, and temp at the throttle body inlet, you can work out a % efficiency and compare between different IC's. Faith, thats your water temp of the water circulatuing round your engine, I doubt that has any idea how hot your IC is getting.
Adam W
Just measured mine, 1.1 bar boost, 26C ambient, I got 37C at the throttle body at full throttle. Result! I run a skyline GTR intercooler, hardpipes, and a hybrid turbo. Totally irrelevant to all you guys but it makes me feel better

FatS. [oh, sorry, AND EASY TO FIT "for MORONS"....... "for ME ":p ] Steve, I am not trying to knock Chris/Dude at all. I would have thought that Toyota did a pretty good job on intercooler efficiency as they were designed for the JDM market & their ambient temps are much higher than ours. Also Toyota always over engineer. As far as SMIC's the stock unit is as efficient as the GReddy, but people switch to the Greddy due to it's additional strength for higher boost. The plastic Toyota ones have been known to split but not at the kind of boost most of us are running. I also know of one guy in Canada running a T88 on a stock side mount with WI. I am sure both the guys have done their homework. Cooler charge temps are a good thing & if they are more efficient than stock then brilliant.
