OK guys, I've got a totally knackered stock IC on my UK TT 6spd, and I also have a very nice, shiny replacement from Chris W waiting to go in it!

If one of you can explain (in terms for an electronics idiot:) ) how to measure the inet air temps - I'll do a before and after on this IC in a MKIV running stock boost.

For what it is worth - the IC from Chris is clearly a quality bit of kit and looks very well engineered. I know this doesn't make it efficient............but it gives me confidence it is!

I chose to replace mine with another side mount because I didn't want to lose the active spoiler - and I agree with Chris about effective ducting and not covering the radiator.

For what it is worth - my stock IC is 9 years old, very crumbly with broken and blocked fins. The car is noticably less powerful when the weather is even slightly warm. It is not doing its job!

Hmmmm I’ll ask anyway…

I’m just thinking of the future and when my Turbo’s let go, I think I would want to go the Hybrid route ??

So, would my assumption be correct, in that I would need a FMIC to run Hybrids anyway?

making a replacement SMIC redundant when fairly new(ish)……..

Relevant info:

I’m on 91,000 miles (8yrs old) and at BPU for last the 5 months so, it could be any day now ??, fingers crossed

I'm not trying to go OT here (Hybrids) but, need to consider my long term plan when having to replace parts.

I think you'd be fine with a SMIC & Hybrids, although a FMIC will release more power. It all depends on the kind of BHP you are looking for.

I know nothing about Hybrids but, would like to see above 400 BHP and as close to 500 BHP as possible but, I might be asking too much ?

(BHP @ crank)

500bhp is possible (crank) but not easy. Adam recently made 480 bhp on JPS stage 3's but he has a FMIC. 450 should be easily achievable.

OK, washed the car at the weekend and checked the SMIC. Looks a bit dull, but generally looked in pretty good nick (94 J-spec - no mods). There were a few leaves in there though :D .

Is it woth trying to cover up the bumper opening with a grill of some description, or would that affect the airflow too much? Come to think of it, is it a sensible idea to fit some mesh across all the openings in the bumper?

Cheers

So, can we have a recap on confirmed SMIC wanters at the moment? So far we have Wolf and myswlf, but how about Paul E or Peter S?

Not sure yet.

terry goes and thor comes on the scene. they both know leon well. its like janet/michael jackson thing you never see them both together.

does anyone think hybrids are a cost effective when you can get a small single kit for $2500 against £2000 for hybrids

i think i would rather pay a bit more for small single.

skyline turbos with steel internals only cost £350 each from rod bell motorsport

the smic v fmic is down to long term plans, glad i went with a fmic you can tell the difference pulls real hard when second turbo kicks in.

cw smic looks a quality made bit of kit against stock

Mark, with hybrids you get some power before 4000rpm (1st turbo) and then a real big kick after 4000rpm (2nd turbo). With a small single you'll get little power before 2500rpm, then it will start to spool up rapidly until it hits full boost at 3500rpm. (all rpms approximate depending on setup). I don't like the feel of the sequential twins so my money would be on a single kit all the way, it's really a decision you have to make yourself though.

Hmm.... THINK ??

Common denominator? KNACKERED INTERCOOLERS. I tooled up to make stock replacement ones with more efficient cores but have had very little interest.

Carry on.......................

I now stock rads for all but the VVTi models, by the way.

Yep................................

This idea of mine is still at the theory stage

Ok.............................

Right, just had a word with Chris, and he says the IC's are £528 including VAT and postage.

Thought they might be :p

Whose ??

Mine, Adams, Johns to name three. All had internals melted and turbos blown away to various extents.

There are also quite a few intercoolers that seem to be on the way out.

Perhaps it is a sales ploy, doesn't mean he's wrong (unless you know better?) - and his intercoolers are 1/2 the price of a Toyoya one. I appreciate there are lots of factors involved, but intercoolers are one of them.

A touch cynical perhaps....
