paul_y3k
Hope someone here can help, A good firend of mine is setting up her own owners club, http://www.peugeot-cc.com – A club for all owners of Peugeot cc’s. Well I’ve been helping with my dodgy html and bit n bobs and everything is nicely in place. She’s got a good few users but has only just released the site. We’ve registered on most of the search engines, and last night we saw google.com crawling around on the forum part … However if we do a search on any of our metatags it’s not showing up ? If we search for http://www.peugeot-cc.com then it returns the link. The whole metatag thing was done by her, so I’m not that sure how that all works. Any ideas how we can bump up the site in the search engine ? Is this something we’re gogin to end up paying for ? Cheers Paul
lust2luv
I'm no expert, but I believe most search engines ignore metatags these days. Make sure important keywords are prominent in the text and title of the first page, get links from other respected websites; those things will push you up the rankings. All the ones I've been incontact with are bloody sharks that don't deliver and charge the Earth.

Lewis
Pete, thats a sweeping statement mate, I can quite easily show how code changes affect rankings etc, perhaps the people concerned in your experience were not selected with enough background checks. It's pretty simple for us, agreed results at the agreed rates within the agreed timescales or not payment required.
Pete
The people that I've experience with are from customers we host. One guy has used four different companies in as many years, not getting any satisfaction from any of them. Maybe his expectations are too high. Maybe we've just been unlucky. One such major player is numogroup. They're huge and do some big blue chip companies. We approached them to use their SEO techniques for Boatshed.com. What they came up with was hardly rocket science, just the usual stuff you can learn from reading pages like http://www.seochat.com . One of their products would have completely killed the site if we'd let them implement it. We've started playing with writing our own applications to create flat sites with injected words, linked page systems etc. It's tricky stuff and sadly takes a long time to see the results to your actions. It's not something I want to really get involved with as it's lots of time and effort and they all moan when they're not in the top 10 for the key phrase "cheap xxx"

Dash Rendar
There's a good summary of best practices and many tips and tricks for getting good search engine results here. It's a year old, but still valid.

In all honesty, there is nothing rocket-scientific about any of it. Each search engine uses a different matrix for ranking sites, they are all published and documented, you simply have to tailor your site to suit the one that you wish to be ranked for. My fav (see: NOT) are the people who use software to submit a page and charge £1k for the pleasure, it's laughable. Anyway, each to their own Hopefully you have better experience in the future, if you ever require contacts, please let me know as I have a number of them for this field.
