Hi all,

I have noticed recently that the red oil warning light stays on for a couply of seconds when starting the engine from cold the yellow goes out immediately. Is this normal or should i get it checked out.New filter and Mobil 1, 0W-40 fitted.

Any help welcome.

sounds like your headlightgaskets gone, a common problem on suparus

is there water in your oil or oil in your water

might allso be the camtiming angle sensor pre tensioner belt is loose.

someone with more technical mind will help you out

dont worry too much

i know nothing, just what you pick up as you go along. i had the warning light flickering under hard braking or cornering. turned out it was the brake fluid was a tad low cw topped it up and has been sound.

now red triangle coming on again on mine under high boost, so that needs checking out soon.you always think the worst. i was thinking it might be the second fuel cut limit on the trl fuel cut, or something bad like detonating. its sort of like comes on and flickers away to nothing. its not violent like fuel cut.

also when i was cleaning the inside enginebay i broke the bonnet pin that pin for alarm/ bonnet open. light was on inside saying a door was open. checked all doors boot and bonnet were closed which they were. lifted bonnet and put a bit of card in where i broke the bonnet close pin and light inside went out.

to the original poster i was only messing in first post.

not what you want to see when you have a problem. dont think its a problem myself ,comes on checks system out then it goes off.

any more info on mods if you have done any, are all oils and fluids topped up.

Frank - Have you checked the oil level and has this problem only occured since the oil and filter change ?

Hi Frank, does it just feel like a couple of seconds or is it actually that long. Time gets distorted when looking at warning lights :) That does sound too long to me.

The Yellow is an oil level warning light as I remember.

What is the mileage on the car. Do you do regular oil and filter changes. What oil do you use?

When my oil pump was failing the red light would take between 2 and 4 seconds to go out and would come on if the car was pointing up a hill at 500RPM tickover.

Could be worth getting the oil pressure checked. I'm not exactly sure how you would go about this, take it to a specialist I guess.

I'g get it checked out sooner rather than later, if it is something starting to go (given that it has just started happeneing) you want to check it out ASAP.

I'd have thought putting in thinner oil would make it worse.

Thanks for your comments,I just hate RED Lights.

I have the supra nearly two years now and It has 28,000 miles on the clock.I am sure this warning light used to go out immediately on startup.

I was told today that if the oil filter anti-Drain back valve is knackered it will take a couple of seconds for oil pressure to build up when starting!.

I intend to put 10W-40 in this weekend any change the oil filter again.

Any more ideas,

Frank.

I think your plans are exactly what i would do in this situation.

Could be a duff filter as you say, rare but i'm sure it does happen.

My oil light doesn't go out instantly.Have checked with a couple of other N/A owners and theirs too is the same. This is ONLY cold starting, when starting at other times it goes out straight away! I use 10/40w oil, changed at 3k intervals.

I work at Honda in Swindon, and this is not an uncommon thing. Our diesel civic......remember they are brand new......when started cold, take up to 4 secs to lose the oil light! I also had an MR2, that too took 1 to 2 secs for the light to go out, so if yours is similar, still get it checked but i wouldn't worry too much.

Can others, give it a go on a cold start, to compare?? Al.

Thanks all for your replys,I intend to change the filter and oil this weekend before I take it to a Garage.

Toyota main dealers in Dublin won`t service or quote parts for imports.Big Deal as I know that Toyota Supra sales in Ireland totaled 2(Both in 1994)UK type.

Anyway thanks for interest and I will post the results.

Regards,

Frank.

Mos, i believe you also have an N/A, not sure if it makes any difference from a TT as the block etc/basics are similar. How you have described it,is exactly the same as mine and 2 other N/A's i have tried from cold.......just a characteristic of the car i believe.Oil light coming on when warm or idling, yes get it checked quickly!!
