Bob
Sorry if it's not 100% technical, but could someone put my mind at rest? I've just got a gasket set for the head, and I'd just like to allay any of my doubts as to the three diddy bits I have pictured here: I think that the first (from left to right) is the sealing washers, am I right? I'm also thinking that the next two are the stem seals, but which is which? If it helps, the green one has a slightly smaller diameter to the hole. I thought the stem seals had a rubber seal to them, and was expecting a black o-ring kinda thing - these just have a rubbery inside and a spring around the top; does that seem right? I know I'll probably be able to deduce all this when the head comes off, but I do like to be prepared p.s. - yes, I know my camera is crap
merckx
You're correct. The washers look like the ones for the cam covers. The stem oil seals are correct, they are like this. Have you looked at the thread from Tlicence The inlet/exhaust valve seals are identified near the end. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=49859 Must be your first cylinder head job. Bob
Yup, first one Figured everyone's gotta learn sometime, so why not now? Gonna be taking the head of completely; thought it must be about time to have a little look at the head gasket anyway (more curiosity than anything else!). My grandad's got a reasonable experience of engine internals, and he'll be helping me along - he's fine as long as you don't want him to "meddle with those damn electronic brain things"! Unfortunately, as TLicence wrote: The inlet ones have a bronze finish to the outside of the seal, whereas the exhaust one has a silver/grey finish my seals aren't Toyota ones (came in a kit from ebay) so the difference is in the end colour. I'm sure it'll be obvious when I strip it down, anyhoo.
merckx
Yup, first one Figured everyone's gotta learn sometime. Definately! I've done quite a few heads, not the Supra yet but it looks easy enough. I'm sure you and your Grandad won't have problems, technically much the same as any other engine.
