How to become a mechanic ?

Recommended Posts

Sick of trying to do a degree. Hate studying and always have.

The main thing in life that i love is cars. Does any one know the routes to go down to become a mechanic or learning for fix bodywork or spray cars.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

As boring as it sounds its worth trying to get your degree first depending on how far through you are. I was really ill towards the last part of my degree but I'm glad I managed to get it done.

By the looks of Rosies and Yulia Superwomen's car you don't need to do anything to be a car sprayer, just learn on the job:cry:

In all seriousness I think you can study to be a mechanic at college but lots of people probably learn by getting an apprenticeship at a garage.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Yeah the best way to learn to be a mechanic is to do an apprentiship, but the pay is awful! I enjoyed the job, but somedays could be really frustrating!

I would definitely finish your degree though first, I quit the apprentiship with about 3 months left untill i would have qualified because i had been offered a brilliant job with better prospects, so took that. three and a half years later i get made redundant (wrongly, but a completely different story) and now have nothing to fall back on as i have no qualifications.

I'd say you were right. If you can cope with rubbish money and being pushed about by some muppet garage owner until you're good enough to get your own place. Sounds like fun in the long run!!

Get fucked over by dodgy tuners who cost you five grand and vow never to fall for that again by learning how to do stuff yourself. (well, that bit is optional :D )

Get spanners, get info off this site, ask friends, and get stuck in & try things out. Get a lot of plasters too, takes a few years to learn how not to injure yourself :) Start small - change a wheel if you've never done that before. Change your oil and filter. Swap your fuel pump. Discs and pads. That sort of thing.

Read some tuning books too. Understanding the theories of internal combustion and suspension and gears and electrics and so forth gives you a better overall understanding of what you are trying to achieve when working on a car.

Also take some pride in what you do and do a proper job, there are far too many people out there that don't even put all the bolts back because they can't be arsed, and they charge you for it.

You don't need a class or night school or anything, if you want to do something like this you can

Could not agree more. People who take pride in what they do and treat cars or other things as if they were their own when they work on them are rare these day. Try finding a trust worth, honest, hard working builder. Too many, want as much money as possible doing as little as possible, but I guess it always has been like that.

I was looking into doing a part time C&G type course in motor vehicle maintenance at our local college. Unfortunately (and I still don't get this) all the courses are mid week, not one single course available on a Saturday, or an evening. As I can't get any time off from work to do this I'll have to settle for a set of spanners and a Haynes manual (as they don't do a Haynes for a Soop MkIV - I guess it's just the spanners)
