John S2
Just been out for a long drive mainly on motorway and on the way back we pulled up at services and could smell oil burning. there was also a bit of smoke coming from near the bulkhead. drove it home from there normally and the car was fine but when we got home we let it tick over for a bit and we could see its leaking oil. its dark at the moment so we cant see exactly where the oil is coming from but we have checked over the engine with a torch and again we cant see anything. what pipes should we check in the morning and where abouts are they? or worst situation what could the problem be? thanks in advance, john
Guest Martin F
As you can imagine it's a little hard for any of us to take a guess with such little information. However i would suggest that you check the passengers side of the engine first as that is where the oil filter and cooler sit. That is if it is actually engine oil that is leaking. Let us know when you have a bit more info.
John S2
cheers for the response martin, as you can imagine my dad is p***ed off due to the fact that he has a mkIII parked up in the garage because of bhg no 2!! so obviously he automatically fears the worst. will check in daylight and let you know. Terminator
Martins checks are worth doing, but the smell of buring oil usually means oil being sprayed on to the exhaust, manifold or turbo housing. Check the connections to the oil feed to the turbos, if you are lucky it is just one of those. BHG on MKIV's are very rare!
Scooter
i had a leak recently. It turned out to be the oil pressure switch which is also on the passenger side of the engine lower down than the oil filter. Relatively cheap fix £10 part x2 hrs labour, so lets hope its that or something equally minor.
mos
Few things it could be, main oil seal is a known problem on mkiv. Pcv valve would give you the smell but not really a leak. When was the last oil change it could be residue?. Oil filler cap seal again the smell but not really a leak and simple to check. Cam cover seal. Any news on the site yet, was it definately oil that was leaking and not any other fluid from your bottom tray.
Simon
Strange coincidence. I got back from a 200 mile journey on Friday and noticed a LARGE pool of oil on my garage floor. What is even more worrying is that no warning lights came on at all despite there being no oil on the dipstick. The car itself seems OK strangely, it seemed to running better than normal on Friday and water temp didn't rise either. However, I will check the oil pressure switch as the filter seems nice and tight so thanks for mentioning that as a soslution. Just need to get underneath the beast now to find out exactly where it is leaking.
