Mk 111 gearbox , how strong ???

You want the R154, fitted as standard to the Turbo models. Very strong indeed, plenty of drag race Mk3s in the states pushing 600bhp on slicks and gearbox failures are pretty rare. Suspension components tend to break before the box does! I've heard of three or four going pop but you can pick em up for about £300 s/h so not a huge heartbreak if it does break. Worth bearing in mind that a V8 will make a lot more torque than a big turbo engine though, and it's torque that kills boxes. A mate of mine has used an R154 in his cobra replica for about ten years with no poblems, but it's a pretty mild 5.7 engine (

It is, or at least a variant of the same box. Just like the auto box on a TT MKIV is a variant of the auto box on a MKIII.

Yeah, I don't doubt that the V160 is stronger, but by the time you've popped a R154 I reckon you've crossed the line from road car into drag car. I doubt you could damage either of them unless you were on drag radials or slicks either, you'd just fry the tyres instead.

From my research, the best gearbox to sit behind a big power, big torque V8 would be a Tremec TKO 5sp as fitted to some recent Mustangs. Rated up to around 550ftlb from memory, but capapable of handling double that with good reliability.
