HKS Cams and Headgasket for SZ

i think you'll find that higher lift cams will give you more power but maybe at the cost of a slightly lumpy idle (depending on whether 256 or 264 or 272). your consumption obviously goes up but you do get a fair few more horses tho ....... maybe 20-30 more ?

if this is incorrect - someone will be along shortly to rectify it.

Hmmm... is that a guess :)

HKS USA don't appear to want to provide data for their cams on stock based turbo cars (because the gains are minimal?) I suspect they are even less likely to give anything definative on this one.

Have you tried asking in the NA section of Supraforums?

hi gav - yes it is a guess... :(

i just thought it would be fair to assume that an NA would benefit from higher lift cams to some degree - at least more than a few like that you would get from an exhaust or an induction kit ( i know, i know - very debatable!). :stupid:

Cheers for the info guys.

I know an Induction kit and exhaust make sod all difference to performance. I only got them for the sound really.

Supraforums does'nt seem to be working at the mo which is a pain.

I was looking at 264 cams, but a lot of people say you don't really get much bhp for your £ with cam work. Is it worth just changing the pulleys?

As for an lumpy idle I will be uprating the fuel pump, fitting bigger injectors and fitting and AFC so surely this will be able to map out the idle probs?

I will be looking long term to go for a single turbo conversion on my NA. Why??? Cos I want to :)

I have managed to source a 1.2HKS HG for £44 which is rather nice  . What I want to do is source all the parts to make the internals strong, being a J-Spec I have no idea of the engines history so stripped down to the HG should give me the chance to inspect some vital parts for wear. Is it worth having the head ported and flowed as I am going to this much trouble.

from what I've read on here, a decat is worth about 20bhp on an NA, I reckon you'll get 10bhp or so with new cams. Gains from headwork will be pretty limited too, theres not a lot left to do with modern high-performance engines cos the manufacturers do such a good job wih them.

Bigger injectors and SAFC won't make any difference to your idle, the ECU will get the fulling pretty much spot on with the standard setup. Idle problems with big cams are caused by (I think) the airflow into the combustion chambers being less than optimal at very low revs, leading to incomplete cylinder filling. Fuelling upgrades will only increase your peak fuel flow rate, ie only required if you're starting to run lean at full throttle.

Theres a really good write up at http://www.t04r.com about a NA>T conversion, one of the most recent contributors (check out the list on the right of the screen). I think it boils down to keping the car pretty much stock, then changing everything in one go. New fuel system, new internals, big turbo, etc. Having said that, I think he swapped in a turbo shortblock and woked with that.

Hi David,

Seeing as I'm a nice chap and even though it's pretty clear you would not be buying HKS from us ;) I can't bear to see anyone getting striped up or making a faux pas.

Assuming '264' means those manufactured by HKS, do not buy them. They will not work. Neither will any other profile.

Cheers,

Thanks Nathan

I was just thinking of all the possiblilties of extra hp for my Supe. Glad someone told me that no cams will fit. Why not by the way, is that area completely different to the TT. I am seeing Leon tommorow and going to go through with him all possibilites of what I can and can't do. I guess I just want to be different and this is why I won't sell my NA and buy a TT.

I didn't say NO cams, I said HKS ones.....

Distributor.......

Personally I would enjoy the car for what it is but for the odd occasion I would still gas it, no question. 50bhp or so.

As for our Mk4 NA page, I know it's wrong. Will be rectified as soon as I get the chance.

Cheers,
