jim_supra
Hi guys, I have just started getting a judder through my steering when i turn the steering wheel, it's nothing to do with balance of the wheels as it does it when the car is stationary aswell. I have just fitted a set of coilovers to the car and have lowered it a bit, so am wondering if it has something to do with this?, as it never occured when i had my standard suspension on. any ideas? cheers. Ian R
Power steering pump ???
Jake
I had a similar sounding problem which turned out to be that the steering rack was loose and moving side to side a few millimeters. I took the car back to the place that had fitted the rack and we found that one of the two securing bolts was missing and the other had worked loose. It's unlikely to be the same problem with yours but worth checking.
jim_supra
Power steering pump ??? It could be just a coincidence and the pump is on its way out, but it seems odd that it only started to happen once i had lowered the car. How did the bolts come out, you got a cattle grid at the bottom of your driveway?! -Ian

Jake
Bloody hell mate was that your spanky steering rack I picked up for you? How did the bolts come out Yeah, that's the one mate. I don't know why they came out/loose. I presume the missing one (A) wasn't torqued up enough by the garage that fitted the rack and fell out, causing the other one (B) to work loose because of the extra stress upon it. It was a nasty surprise when I saw only the clamp © and bolt (B) securing the rack to the car. (Pic is not actual of my engine bay)
Ian C
Bolt A would be the difficult one to get at then, judging by that picture Not that I'm suggesting a garage would be so slack I wouldn't have liked to have been them when you rolled up! -Ian
Nic
Jim, have you checked the steering fluid level, if it is low and you've got air in it then it can cause the juddering you describe. If it is low get it topped up quick otherwise you do damage to the pump.
chris_bramley
I've just had this. Stopped on the way home from London to chill, like an idiot left the lights on so battery went flat without me noticing. went to startt he car and finish the journey... no go. Managed in muddy gravel at 6am to push the damn heavy thing backwards and out to the road from the car park, rolled it down the hill, jumped it into first, hey presto... and now it judders! Last time it did this I had to change the fluid completely in the pump. Any ideas as to why pushing it backwards and turning the wheel without power woudl do this? Is this going to be air? If the car has been lowered, it could be your tracking. Best get your alignment checked mate.
Steve Paine
Kim, did you ever get to the bottom of this, as mine has just started playing up on right turns and a slight groaning noise when turning wheels at slow speed. That should read Jim sorry! Edited December 31, 2012 by Steve Paine Autocorrect changed sex of originator (see edit history)
David P
It's the lowering that's done it, you need a full geometry set-up. (6 years 5 months 2 days. Great revival ) Edited December 31, 2012 by David P (see edit history)
Steve Paine
It's the lowering that's done it, you need a full geometry set-up. (6 years 5 months 2 days. Great revival ) Mine was running fine, did a search and found this. It doesn't actually show the result. Think mine is power steering rack/pump related! There is nothing wrong with a 6 year 5 month 2 day old revival. Is there a search button on here somewhere?
David P
Maybe the filter at the bottom of your PAS header tank needs cleaning? Do a search on that.
