lpher
Hi I need a bit off help here.....the story is as follows: Bought my Supra in late february this year. The rear tyres where VERY worn, so i had to replace them. As i live in Norway...i had to getwintertyres for the car...trouble was that the widest tyres for nordic conditions was 235/40 for the rear. The salesman checked 'his book' and ok'd a Yokohama setup....so i went for 225/45 up front and 235/40 on the back....on the original 8/9,5" alloys. NOW...come summer...had the car displayed at a local carshow (the local toyota dealer asked me if i would atend for them) last sunday. And at that show i noticed that my reartyres where VERY worn in the middle!!! Confronted the shop who sold me the tyres today....and he was a bit fuzzy about why it had happened. Checked the tyrepressure....originally 36 something....mine where 32 'something' ;-) Can anyone tell me why this has happened? I need some outside assistance quickly, so that ill know how to handle this.....whos to blame etc ;-) @lpher
Steve W
Have you got Standard Wheels , and if so, UK or JAP ie. 16x8 & 16x9 or 17x8 & 17x9.5 or others ? ? ? if the tyre is VERY narrow for the rim, perhaps it tends to 'pull-up' at the edges>>>>>> make any sense ? ? [ANYONE? could this happen ? ]
Matt Harwood
Steve, stop drawing pervy picures... You're not at school anymore!
lpher
LOL ;-) Leave the boy alone...hes quite the artist, aint he? ;-) Seriously....im using the standard TT wheels...and i live in a country where we drive on 'the right side' of the road....so no jap import in other words...just got your average 8x17" and 9,5x17" wheels ;-) Anyone else have any comments? @lpher
GavinL
Over inflation leads to wear in the centre of the tyre
Steve W
TRUE, but @lpher says his were ~32psi that's pretty low for a Soop !? certainly not OVER-inflated, quite the opposite in fact. [....now, where's me crayons gone ! ! ? ?]
Terminator
I would say your rears are too narrow for the rim. I believe the optimum for tyre performance on the stock 17 rim is 275. I know the supplied tyre is 255 but that is as about as narrow as they should go. AFAIK. So Steve may be on to something.
Adam W
If that really is the widest tyre you can get, you may do better to get an extra pair of front wheels and mount them on that.

Wow, a 6-wheeled Supra, cool I've got unusual amounts of wear in the centre of my rear tyres and I'm running at 32psi, now dropped to 31 in an attempt to balance it out a bit. Curious. Is it because I spend a disproportionate amount of time above 80mph so centrifugal force causes the middle to wear faster...? -Ian
Terminator
Your blowers wont last long at 31psi mate;)
Ian C
Oh, so that'll explain the unusually rapid tyre wear I thought they meant *boost* pressure!

lpher
Originally posted by GavinL True but these are winter tyres which I suspect are not normal tyres. True....but whats different is only the rubber compound. Its alot softer..and willl therefore wear more quickly...but that doesnt explain why i have two 2,5 months old tyres that are worn out...ONLY in the middle....the shoulders seems to have about a season or two extra on them...its that much of a difference. I aint the type who go complainning about stuff, every now and then ;-) ...so thats why im consulting you guys to hear what you might think about this mess ;-) Can i stick this on the shop and/or yokohama? The dealer actually called the norwegian yoko importer while i was i the shop....and it seemed to me they werent quite agreeing with the max for 235 tyres being 9 or 9,5" Or am i barking up the wrong tree here? @lpher
Terminator
Have you checked with the manufacturer of the tyre, to see what pressure they recommend for the fitment. Centre wear is class over inflation, which may have been exacerbated by being a tight fit.
Steve W
"...........exacerbated by being a tight fit ! ! ! " You just HAVE to 'slip-one-in', don't you, you dirty-minded-type person you ! ? NICE ONE:p

Anyhow...the shop has either sold me a tyre that doesnt fit my car, or has misscalculated the tyrepressure...or both....either way it seems they are to blame for this...am i right? ;-) @lpher
