NA-T Drift Project

Morning all, thought i'd document stuff here as it'll be a little easier. 

Purchased an NA Auto Aerotop with the help of a forum member a few years back that had been sat for a while. 

I have recently purchased an NA-T Setup from another member on debated whether to use it in my current BMW E36 or have a bit of fun with a Supra. After much deliberation and weighing up the pro's and con's I decided on the supra. 

 

So here is the day it was collected

It didn't run so i changed the starter motor, fuel filter and pump and managed to get it going.

Back then i stripped the carpet out and dyed it, as it was covered in dog hairs and a big dog turd underneath the drivers seat.. nice.. It's still out of the car so i'm having to move it by sitting on the floor.

Spent best part of 4 hours yesterday moving cars about trying to get it out of the unit, whipped the battery on and fired straight up.

As you can see, it's a little crusty on the rear air inlet and the Sills. i have purchased some replacement bits from Nash which should just be a straight cut out, treat and weld job (Hopefully).

Looks ok from 10ft..

 

Anyway, here is the NA-T i collected a couple weeks back. It's a non VVTi Engine with Whifbitz NA-T kit, NA oil pump,  Link G4x Supralink ECU, Clevite Big end bearings. I believe the bottom end was rebuilt when the kit went in.

The Dyno graph was showing around 420hp at 0.5 bar which is more than plenty for the kind of drifting i'll be using it for at this time.

My next immediate plans will be as follows;

Remove current Engine and Auto gearbox

Spray inside Engine Bay and clean up any rusty bits.

Hey Peter, will be an r154 in this one, I’m going to tryyyyy (big emphasis on try) to be road legal with it but in honesty it’ll prob just stay as dedicated drift build. I’ve driven to tracks before but I don’t drive as hard because I’ve got to get back haha

Makes sense mate. I was going to say it’s near enough impossible to be a great drift car and still a road car if that makes sense. Can be one or the other or average at both, but for full drift missile you need to lose some weight and set it up for drifting.

Picked up some Tein coilovers this weekend but won’t fit them just yet.

got the exhaust, prop and gearbox out aswell. Wouldn’t hurry to do that again as the exhaust bolts were completely seized and rounded off. I’ve got a whifbitz 3” dual box to go back on when new engine is in.

overall took me about 6 hours (2.5 hours battling with the rusted bolts)

 

Next weekend will be removing the Rad, AC condenser and all ac bits. I never even checked if the AC worked but the condenser looks very crispy so I doubt it! Will remove the Intake etc.

i take it I can remove the engine with the belts on etc? As the manual shows to remove the waterpump etc which seems a pain.

Relatively productive Weekend, manage to remove the Auto shifter, remove the Rad and everything from the hot and cold sides (bar the AC at the moment) ready for the engine to be pulled.  Found a little hole under the battery tray so that's another thing to add to the 'weld up' list. Once that's out going to continue stripping the car, possibly cut out the trans tunnel and get some welding done on it.

Stripdown continues.. not really sure why i'm going to all this effort, but great opportunity to learn some skills and some patience...

Started by whipping the wings off.. by whipping i mean taking a few hours laying on the ground trying to figure out what i did to deserve rounded bolts and rust in my eyes.

Then removed the rear bumper and crash bar.. lo and behold rear crash bar was ruined so had to cut it off (looking for one if anybody has one!)

Then removed the parts behind the rear air inlet - anddddddd another hole

After this thought i'd tackle a nice easy job of removing the 20+ year old window tint. Patience starting to dwindle here.. still haven't got it off - tried steam, heat and goo gone but no luck in shifting it.

Gave up with that and did my first Modification (loose term) of a window de-wiper

Then thought i'd strip more of the engine bay ready for a rubdown

And finally starting to remove the rubbish alarm and immobiliser

And thats about it at the moment.. next plans remove the bonnet harness fully, remove brake booster etc while i wait for parts to arrive

Went and got myself some Tint remover and easy stripper. Long story short it did f all. Also tried ammonia, pure acetone, goo gone, sticky stuff remover, bug and tar remover but still wouldn’t shift the tint. Well for the rear anyway.. the side windows were okay as I could use a blade but for the rear with the defroster lines I had to scrape the tint using a copper scourer as not to scratch the glass. A 16 hour process that I’m so happy is over.…

All whilst taking breaks doing this I decided to finish removing some more bits from the engine bay. Loom gone, brake booster gone, abs pump gone. Misc bits also removed like brake lines, horn, bonnet catches etc. brake booster a little worse for wear so I’ll paint that while it’s out.

Got some plastic plugs for the PS rack top so I could get the lines out the way. Will need the boots replaced though as they’re all cracked. As you can see also removed the black felt that goes on the firewall but I’ll put that back on once painted. 
 

Chucked the horn and catches in vinegar to remove the rust, gave them a bit of a rub and I’ll paint them in the next few days.

Next I got on with removing the pedals. Relatively straight forward job which is nice.

Just spent the last few days removing all the miscellaneous bits really like plugs and grommets etc along with most of the interior (bar the dash) got a few touch up bits to spray inside the car.IMG_9156.jpeg.a1801b02ac025b103670dbbb550e4423.jpeg

Other than that drilled the holes ready for clutch master cylinder, and assembled new brake and clutch pedals.

That’s pretty much where I’m up to at the moment. Next plan is to drop the fuel tank. Drill and re-tap some sheered bolts from the bay, give it a good vacuum then maybe start rubbing down the bay for paint. I might start painting some misc bits also.

Fuel tank now out, no idea how but when removing the fuel tank strap the retaining nut snapped off inside the box section. Had to cut top of the nut off, get a magnet inside to get the nut out but no idea how I’m going to re fix this yet. Possibly a rivnut I guess..

Started off rubbing down a few of the misc bits to paint. Halfway through it really now

Inbetween that managed to switch over the Auto Dial to Manual which was awesome

Managed to pick up a FFIM with 90mm TB which looks to be of decent quality. Still brand new but unused.

Then was a trip to London to pick up a bonnet.. It's in pretty good nick, just needs the washer jet holes cutting out and maybe some Aerocatches fitted

The car then went off to @TheTurtleshead for a new lower rad support to be Welded in

When the car came back i thought it would be a good idea to paint the engine bay so got onto scotching it all up and treating some of the rusty patches and put it into epoxy

Sprayed the OEM 202 Black

Then the clear went down nicely

  

 


Until it dried - and i had a bit of a disaster with it.

After speaking with a couple of paint experts, we couldn't really work out what was happening, so i rubbed it back ready to shoot another layer of colour and clear again.

And....... the same thing happened. We were finally able to conclude that the solvents in the clear were reacting with the solvents in the epoxy. With that being the case i thought the only way round it would be to completely strip it back and start again with different products.

 

So here is where the car currently stands..

Luckily a local bodyshop has offered to spray it for me using their stuff if i prep it for them which is an offer i couldn't really refuse after spending around 30 hours getting it back to this point there's no way i'm risking it again.

 

Hopefully will be painted by the end of the week then fingers crossed off to JJ for some welding on the sills and manual surround.

Also off to pick some bits up for it this weekend so watch this space i guess 😅

Might have to - if i do it again. I think from factory they were done this way? Just need to get myself a decent compressor and airfed set up then it hopefully won't be so bad.

After braving the storm this weekend, managed to pick up a few bits.

 

Firstly R154 Gearbox, Clutch, Prop etc. Believe it's got the drift motion hydraulic release bearing kit so will prob leave that for now to match with the AP Racing twin clutch.

Also managed to pick up a 4" ETS FMIC and a set of Black Recaros with Harnesses.
