OE Front Bumper - Saggy !

Recommended Posts

Morning folks,

Just working my way round fitting a second hand OE bumper to the car. I've noticed that the lower section of the 'mouth' is quite deformed (wavy/saggy) I know these bumpers are really flexible as I've had a similar experience with the MR2 but has anyone else had this issue ?

Also, the piece looks too long - I assume there was differences between the S1 and s2 bumpers (as there were two options for this place but only one was available)

Was thinking of cutting some 2-3 aluminium plate and putting it underneath to bolster it a bit.

Any thoughts?

The bottom lip on a stock bumper isn't flexible.

I ran over a badger in my Supra 15 years ago and it rolled several times the full length under the car. I noticed a few days later there was a small dome in the bottom lip so I had the bumper replaced. If a 60mph badger impact hardly deformed the lower lip I wouldn't be sure you have an OEM bumper fitted.

When I took the car to a Ford dealer for a new insurance bumper fit the damage assessor said a Focus was written off a week earlier following a badger hit. I said but this is a Toyota. He didn't look to happy about that.

We might be at cross purposes @Rider I've not described it well and I couldn't find a pic ... this bit here is what I meant image.png.613e1b97b558dc7c75f0f55db9dfe202.png

This little lip as it were is all wavy ... It has the OE bar on top and the OE plastics bolted to it but it's still not very flat ...

The facelift bumpers are supposed to have a bar across the middle that's supported top and bottom. Guess yours is missing that? Facelift bumpers also have the indicators repeaters on the sides. Pre-facelifts are on the wings

@Wishieftrottle perfect timing and pictures 🙂 So yours looks the same as mine. The lower part of the bumper where you habe that black support bar is really wavy on mind (doesn't just dip, its like a wave) I've ordered the centre bar (and am going to cut the holes for the indicators/side repreaters) but apart from that it looks identical.

The top part of the 'mouth' will sort itself out when you clip it into the bumper bar. The bottom I reckon I'm going to need a bit of plate to make that look anywhere near half decent.

Also @Wishieftrottle could I be a pain and get you to take some pictures/measurements of where the side marker holes are, I need to cut some on mine ! Been trying to get that snippet of info for weeks but nobody seems to have a tape measure ... or a S2 bumper.

Also have you noticed how weird it is that the black bar in this picture is wider than the plastic on the bottom ?

Hi, to make full conversion to S2 version, you need to drill also hole for facelift parking light. I am surprised about quality of new bumper. I need to repair almost all holes for emblem, side markers, holes for the bumper bar. Enlarge them and/or move them a little bit. I will send measurement tomorrow.

Very much appreciated my friend. Good luck with your install. The bumpers don't appear to be the best quality but couldn't decide I'd that was just mine being old ! Looks like some titivating may be required 🙂
