shaz2010
Hi lads Not had the car out since august last year, the battery was a couple of years old so I went and got a new one from Halfords. Started up no bother and went for a 6 mile round trip last night, lights on radio on heaters etc. Then I noticed my rear light bulb light was on, my battery light came on, trac light on radio died. Then just as I was pulling into the estate power steering went. Car completely died as I rolled onto my drive. (Very Lucky) So I couldn’t shut the doors with the fob so went out to lock via the key opened the door and the barrel light was on. So I went to start and it started no bother after being absolutely flat 5 mins before. is this likely to be the alternator. Need to get a tester on it to check. And who does alternators new? AC93
Get a new one from Keron, SRD or TCB. Check all the terminals are tight and earthed up properly

AC93
Get a multimeter on it while running and see what you get. Might be a draining cells in the battery
Annabella
Battery should be about 12.4v when car off, when cranking shouldn't drop below 10v, when on should be over 14v if alternator is working.
shaz2010
Ok so 12v at the battery car not on, then started 10.6v. I’ve taken the alternator off. Any ideas of the values of the rectifier and the regulator? I’ll post a picture of the bushes they are very low.
shaz2010
After removing everything they seem ok?

shaz2010
10.6v
AC93
Sounds like alternator is dead If you do this at the voltage jumps upto 13.5+ when running then you have a bad/missing earth
Annabella
Yes as above it should a lot higher voltage when running, try what AC93 said, obviously with the alternator back in!! And the 10.6v you said above was with the alternator back in when running? Edited May 3, 2023 by Annabella (see edit history)
shaz2010
I’ve had the alternator bench tested and the rectifier is shot. But for the age of it I’ll keep it and repair as a spare. I’ve ordered a new one off Keron. Coming tomorrow. I’ll check the test to check for any bad earths. Definitely need to strip out the original toad alarm. Heard they are a real battery drainer.
shaz2010
Update: New alternator installed and now running the correct voltage while the car is started. BUT As I’ve not been out in her for a good 10 months maybe this is the reason. I noticed a screeching noise when I started it up just as it cranked over. I turned it off and had a look around the pulleys I noticed the tipex I put on the crank pulley years ago (6 maybe) had moved about a 1” and half! I pulled on the pulley and it’s starting to come away about 10mm movement while I was pulling it back and forward. So glad I never took her on a 20 min run to my father in laws Garage to do an oil service. Could have turned into a bit of a mess. So it’s on the drive and I’m gonna attempt to get the nut off the crank. Any advice would be appreciated. Seen loads of ways on YouTube. Father in law is bringing some battery windy guns down. Hope it comes off.

Swampy442
It probably wasn't charging because the pulley was slipping, the alternator was probably fine And re pulley bolt, Ive got the Toyota tool, used it several times, makes it easy.

Hi mate I got the alternator tested from a local place who bench tests them and it was fried. I’ve heard of these you got a picture of it or what it’s actually called? Cheers
