pf85
I've been messaging someone who is selling an unused Precision 6466 Gen 2 BB turbo, however I've noticed in the photos that there are two things which was unexpected to me: 1. There is black paint on one of the compressor fins 2. There is a grinded section out of the end shaft bolt on the turbine Is this normal? Its an unused part, I know for balancing there can be some grinding but I've never seen anything to this scale.
Mike2JZ
Not sure on black paint, could be from when it was manufactured. I see similar colour markings on Borg warners every now and again. The shaved bit on the turbine shaft is normal
pf85
Thanks Mike, that makes me feel more confident, I just found it odd that there is some paint on the wheel brand new. Perhaps the factory use this method to line up position when manufacturing/balancing.
Style
Yeah I'd have guessed the paint was used as a reference when balancing it or something too. Could it have been a refurbished unit rather than new?
pf85
It was bought from Whifbitz last November but never actually fitted or ran - I've seen a screenshot of the sales receipt which does back this up. The guy seems genuine enough but at the same time is a stranger to me and I like to double check everything is legit especially at this level of cost and a critical part. Burna
It's a second hand part at the end of the day, you make the saving but take your chances. Only you can weigh up if the saving is worth the risk, or worth buying brand new with the hope of some come back if it breaks, but tbh you don't get any comebacks on failed turbos either way.
