mc92
I took my car to the garage today because it's been pissing out oil from the front main seal and I'm too lazy to change it myself. They said they would be happy to do the seal, but only if I cleaned all the oil off the engine first. I thought getting oil on you was in the job description for a mechanic
evinX
If they arnt willing to clean oil off to do a oil seal - AVOID. I did mine myself as a few areas are leaky. And im doing it bit by bit. Still some oil on my undertray but its not the crank seal...have to do my valve covers and suspect my oil filter housing and oil pressure switch also. Want something doing Properly. Do it yourself. Welcome to 2022.

Big Supes
What's the world come to when mechanics are frightened of a bit of oil.

mc92
I decided I'd give it a good blast with the pressure washer, it was indeed very oily. I found one of the bolts I'd lost from the cambelt cover too, which was lucky.

Yeah, a few years, it's gradually gotten worse to the point where I have become annoyed enough to do something about it. IIRC the timing belt was done not long before I bought it so maybe they didn't change the seals at that time it is a mystery.
mwilkinson
Careful, you've exposed some clean subframe there. Next thing you know you'll be ripping the underside apart to make it all look clean.

I'm actually considering having the whole thing stripped back and refreshed underneath in a couple of years but I've got some painting to do for now.
mc92
I took it to another garage and they're having fun with it. Apparently the crankshaft pulley bolt hole had been stripped and helicoiled in the past and they managed to break the helicoil when taking the pulley off. I'm glad I didn't decide to do it myself
Swampy442
The crank shaft pulley bolt hole is the crank!
mc92
Not the crank pulley, the timing belt tensioner much better. Edited July 6, 2022 by mc92 (see edit history)
