tayr
Hi all, so I went on a drift experience a couple weeks back and it was great fun. Booked myself in for a 1-2-1 6 hour course in sept but in the meantime bought myself this little monster as an impulse buy. it needs some tlc but it’s not too bad. 1999 Sport 6 speed manual with lsd. 87k on clock Im surprised what a great package they are out of the box. Heated seats too! Goes sideways very easily (in wet at least). Looking to use it for some proper drift days in future Edited November 14, 2022 by tayr (see edit history)
tayr
Few little updates since purchase. LSD Removed and Welded Diff Fitted Hydro Handbrake plumbed in Decat Manifold fitted Full fluid Flush/Cambelt + Waterpump change Fitted Electric uprated power steering pump from an Astra 16 Skid wheels picked up Wired up switch to allow for permanent fans to stop overheating if required. Then went for a skid - car handled great, Power steering reservoir leaked a little bit, i think there was still some air in the system but will sort that. Went through 2 brand new tyres and about 5 part worns. Got about 5 hours of solid seat time which was great. Already booking in the next session

Have been looking at turbo kits for this though
Mike2JZ
IS200 goes alright with a supercharger on them, tuned one a few years ago, i think someone in the UK makes a kit for them. I probably wouldnt turbo the IS200 engine as its a bit choclate, better off dropping in a 1JZ/2JZ into them if you wanna go mad in it
tayr
Went and test drove a 350z to replace the Lexus, it was a good price but figured it would need a bit of money thrown at it again to get it drift ready, so decided to stick with ye olde faithful. So went a bit mad, spent half the cars value on random bits. Went for some new HSD Monopro's with 14/12 spring rate. think i will need stiffer but gives me a base to start with. Was going to go for BC's which were about £200 more but then realised i'm not a pro drifter. Got myself a 330mm vertex wheel, NRG slim boss kit with driftworks quick release. And also a BB5 bucket seat with side mounts. The seat is for 32" waist but is tight as fook so will need to not eat for a week before next event.
tayr
Got the coilovers on this weekend. Rear took me 1 hour, fronts took me 6 hours. Rounded bolts etc.. pain in the backside. But they're on. i've got no idea what height they're on. And if you're wondering whether the front is too low? Well you're absolutely right, i bottomed out every 10 seconds driving it back. So i'll leave the rears as they are, the fronts i'll raise by like 20-30mm
rider
If you phone up Lexus customer helpline people they should be able to give you the arch clearance. On the Supra I was told it's a 25mm gap for stock suspension and 15mm for the optional Bilstein setup. Same clearance on all four arches. tayr
thanks mate, i'll do that. Daft question but how do you measure the arch clearance, if from arch to tyre surely it depends on the tyre?
rider
I'd assume you need to go from the OEM tyre/wheel rim size combo. When I had my chassis tune the tuner brought up the car specs and then went around measuring the gap. All on mine were 15mm on non OEM tyre/rim combination so no shimming was required on the non adjustable coil overs. But, you ideally aim to keep the tyre profile in line with the rim size anyway, otherwise the speedometer reading will be affected so any alteration should only be a low few % at most and a low few percent on 15mm doesn't make a lot of difference. tayr
So since last time I raised the height a little bit on both and left the dampening well alone, fitted the bucket seat which is tight as fook and got my steering wheel on. got myself into another drift day beginning of Jan and decided to see what I could do on the bigger track. Struggled at first but eventually started getting the hang of it. this car is honestly such a great package and even though it doesn’t have a lot of power it skids great. I’ve uploaded a short video where I talk to myself but I’ve booked again for this Wednesday so hopefully learn a bit more and get even better. If someone can embedd the video that would be great IMG_0059.MOV Edited January 20, 2023 by tayr (see edit history)
