evinX
So i thought id post up a How to on replacing the leather gaiter on a manual dash panel and how to make it more serviceable. You will need 10mm drill bit Hobby saw Stanley knife Toothpicks Everbuild Superglue HV JB weld M4 Nylon bolts, washers & nuts 1. Use a 10mm drill bit to burr away the plastic rivets that hold the plastic ring on the underside of the panel. You will touch the ring a little but it will be fine. 2. When the ring comes off, use the stanley kife to remove the rest of the rivets leaving a flat surface. 3. Use a model saw to cut the heads off the Nylon nuts. 4. Place the ring back on the panel in the correct orientation and use the superglue to glue one of the nlyon bolts to the panel through the hole in the plastic ring. Repeat this for all the holes. Making sure you glue to the actual panel and not the ring. NOTE - 2 of the bolts need to be shorter to clear the tab that the metal clip goes onto. You can see this in the picture. 5. Once they are all glued down you will find they all point slightly in different directions even though the surface is flat. This is because of the shape of the panel. 6. You will find the superglue is strong enough to hold these but i like them to be extra strong. Use some JB weld and apply a small amount as the base of the bolts over the superglue. I used a toothpick to apply it. 7. Now you will be able to fit the new gaiter & plastic ring and then use the washers and nuts to secure. The bolts are strong enough to take strain from the ring pushing onto the leather gaiter - its tight but works. Hope this helps some people out, its neat, cheap and serviceable. Never seen a thread ever on how to do it. Edited February 20, 2022 by evinX (see edit history)
