SUPRA4EVA
Just finished up the timing/fan belt change. Reused the fan belt tensioner and this is how it's sitting. What do these marks actually mean? I assume it's all good as the tensioner was almost touching the PAS pulley so I had to twist it CW to get the belt on and now it's sitting around those marks so it must be tensioned correcly. m12aak
That's a fair question, I have also wondered this but never looked into it. I'd imagine it has something to do with being a visual aid if the tensioner's still within spec or not, and being on the middle line is good? Yeah, the BGB doesn't really say anything about this...unless I missed it. Just before installing the fan belt, the 3 lines on tensioner were over to the left of the main line (on the engine) so it's definitely a good sign and should be tensioned right. But it's good to hear what others think...with me doing this for the first time.

Yeah I don't ever remember seeing anything in the TSRM either (I assume that's what you're referring to – not to say calling it BGB is wrong, I just haven't come across that before!) The line difference is likely to be the slight length difference between an old stretched belt and a new tight one. As long as it doesn't squeal/slip and the idler bearing itself is still quiet and smooth it should be perfectly fine. I never really gave it much thought when changing mine other than just checking the bearing was good.
