TrickyBlue
Hi all, I'm almost ready to get my engine rebuilt, going forged pistons and rods. Having never had any experience regarding new engines how would i go about its first start up and breaking it in? Would it be better to send it off to be tuned first? I'll be refitting the rebuilt engine myself along with a mate who has experience removing and fitting engines.

Swampy442
100% you need to break it in first before you tune it. Theres as many opinions on the subject as there days in the year, listen to what the builder tells you
baldy
You only need to bed the rings in, use breakin oil 20 minutes at 2500rpm, dump oil new filter, tune it, happy days
Style
I'd agree with Swampy and do what your builder advises. If the worst was to happen and something did go wrong, you'd have a better chance of getting some help from your builder if you'd run the engine in as per their advice. Real Street don't bother with break in at all really. But doesn't mean anyone else should. It's just their own subjective approach
TrickyBlue
Thanks for all the replies. Seems there is no 'set in stone' method for running these engines in. Edited July 19, 2021 by TrickyBlue (see edit history)
