Replacement Keys with no original

Counteract

Recommended Posts

I have searched through a few 15 year old plus posts, but could not find an exact answer to my query.

I picked up my 93 JDM NA Manual at the weekend (link here if anyone is interested) - the seller is going to try and look for the keys for the car, but I have contacted a couple of local locksmiths about this, and one was under the impression it may have a transponder? Seeing as the car is one of the first MKIVs, I would assume not, however is anyone able to confirm thie either way for me please?

I was looking into a replacement lock set, but if a replacement Toyota key is ~£40 (ebay AUS prices) and a locksmith has an hourly rate, I reckon it's going to work out way easier and cheaper than finding a full set of replacement locks and keys from a breaker.

One of the locksmiths mentioned key codes and supplied the attached photos, but did not mention a transponder.

My Supra has a Scorpion transponder immobiliser fitted. they never came as standard equipment.

Without keys you are going to need to change the locks and asking someone like Keron would be a good place to start. After the keys + locks you have the remote fobs c/l issue with JDM cars in that Denso factory paired key fobs for the JDM market with the c/l module so you'd best ask for that at the same time as you are looking for a set of scrapper locks and keys. Other Supra markets were treated to a behind the steering wheel programmable c/l module.

PS = For £40 key cost you mention I assume that's a remote fob key, you can buy the blank keys (no fob) much cheaper than that from Toyota.

your best option is to take the drivers door lock out and take it to a good locksmith who can make a key for as little as £10-£15. As long as the key is the same for the ignition ..... trying to find lock sets now is very hard....

there are no transponders or anything, just a good old fashioned key.... not specific to supras so any toyota around the same year is the same.... so most locksmiths keep them in.... even timpsons keep the blanks.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll do as you said Keron and try a locksmiths with a door lock. I think it was you I tried to contact through eBay about a lock set a while back, as I knew this would be one of the first hurdles with the car.

I'll update this once I have it resolved for anyone else in a similar situation in the future.

Thanks guys!
