Removing Aerotop rear quarter glass

tayr

Recommended Posts

This weekend i plan to remove the rear quarter glass from my aerotop.

As you can't buy these anymore i heard you could re-use them if you cut them out correctly from the inside.

With that being said, i have purchased a crafting knife and some blades, and a blowtorch to heat the knife.

Does anyone have any tips for me before i start?

Many thanks

Would you not be better off using a cutting wire? Something similar to a cheese cutter/garrotte that you can manipulate with a sawing action between both hands. @baldy Any insider tips?

This was my first thought but as these windows are glued in it can make them non-reusable or something

The bodyshop i used removed mine and refitted ok.

Just don't forget the bolts, they are glued and bolted.

Do not use a blowtorch. The easiest way are the packs of cheap stanleys to dice away at the sealant. I removed mine and 1 at Kerons yard years ago this way. Worked 3 times.

Ok, thank you - were you able to re-use them? I take it you literally just re-seal them in?

Yep, use a chisel style hobby blade to level off the old sealant. Use a glass adhesive that uses a primer to use on the old sealant surface before applying the new sealant

Ok, so just took 2 hours to remove one. I thought I cut as best as I could but there’s a few peaks on troughs.

does this look right then or have or have I fudged it? I guess level it off now nicely? 7E61C84F-71AE-4AAD-8AC5-716F078310F2.thumb.jpeg.1670c249b6a28782e15542e5c6063168.jpeg34D34450-91E4-4844-BF88-E2D6C4D39FF6.thumb.jpeg.5b1cce94624e2fe77a36f6683171bcb9.jpeg33FFF58A-E39C-49EB-86A4-8950E051DFC8.thumb.jpeg.332f395104d68b11fcb0da0ed1021a3a.jpeg

Some do. Some dont. I personally would. And when applying the new primer for the sealant to sit on remember to key the clearcoat with a medium scotchbrite

Removing the sealant on the car is a must.

Anyone who doesn't is lazy. Painting onto old sealant would be a cowboy job. But leave it until its paint time. As wire wheeling it off or any other method would leave bare metal.

i;ve got some stuff which literally just dissolves it. I just wanted to be sure before i started removing it and wouldnt get a good seal again.

Anyway, both our out now. Second one took me about 45 mins and 2 slices through my fingers.

Cheers for all the guidance, i'm sure i'll be back with more questions

What have you got that dissolves it? I don't need to do the job myself anytime soon (hopefully!), but I'm just curious because isn't that stuff like tiger seal? I had to remove some old tiger seal on some OE side skirts before I fit them and it took me hours!

When I’m next at the unit I’ll take a photo as I can’t quite remember what it’s called but it’s really good!
