Turbo Oil Pressure Regulator

Recommended Posts

So, I still have yet to check my logs. May do this weekend (got some work to complete before Thursday so bit rushed until then).

But with a rebuilt turbo, I'm thinking prevention is better than cure.

I'm going to assess the turbo return line, maybe increase the diameter of the piping and fitting to eliminate any restrictions there. As I did only have an issue during missing a gear and bouncing off the rev limiter 🙄 so any weak points hopefully won't be achieved but better safe than sorry.

If I install a turbo feed regulator such as one of these bad boys;

If the oil return was blocked or wasn't flowing sufficiently (even at regulated inlet oil pressure), how would that affect the turbo oil pressure.

I feel like it's obvious and I'm just being a bit dumb here.

And yes, I know I need to check the logs to try and understand why the seals went. I'll do it, pinky promise.

If the return is big enough and the system clean enough it should never block, my brother had a smoking issue on a new turbo once, turns out there was a piece of plastic wrapping stuck in the drain, causing enough back pressure to leak past the seals once pressure built up.

 The PRV in the oil pump should be sufficient to manage oil pressure throughout the system, the only thing that controls the pressure in the turbo is the size of the restrictor (in a ball bearing turbo), BB turbos require less oil pressure than a journal bearing turbo. Providing you have the right size restrictor and the right size drain gasket, you will have no issues.
