handbrake not holding- need advice

Usually I like to take stuff apart, find the problem, look up part numbers etc but I don't have space to work on the car anymore and when I do it's really limited space/time.

IIRC a few years ago I replaced the front pistons/seals on the fronts as they were really corroded and binding up but I didn't have too much issues with the rears.

Now the handbrake is just not holing and the car will roll back on any small incline. I see it uses shoes also.

I just want a heads up as to what to expect as I can't even take the wheel off to have a look.

Is it wroth just buying a full set of shoes and cables now?

I had the same issue a while back but I just cleaned /scuffed up the shoes, re adjusted them and it was loads better

Shoes don’t have much meat on them when there new as it’s just to hold the car

I had the time to rip it apart but you might as well buy new shoes, strip it all apart, if they not worn I’d just clean, adjust and send the news ones back

I used to use the handbrake to slow down on motorways when the bill were racing up behind until I realised there was only a thin covering on those shoes. Then I kept to 70mph.

I can't remember how high it sits but I think it's more than I'd like...

The car sits a lot but I do use a slab to keep it from rolling back and I never yank the handbrake, only enough to engage but here it doesn't do much anymore anyway.

Also are the NO2 and 3 cables interchangeable?

Why can't you take the wheel off?

Ideally jack up on the diff, and place stand under, remove both wheels. then in the rear disk there should be a rubber bung, screw driver that out then rotate the wheel so it's at the top (I think it's top), then shine a torch through the hole and you should see a cog. Then you use a flat head screw driver to lever it up or down to loosen or tighten (will try and look this up) the handbrake. If you have a helper with some experience you can adjust both sides say two clicks and perhaps sense if it's better or worse. Once you know you can keep going that way until both sides just drag and then back them off a bit and see how you handbrake feels then.

The shoes are thin but for just parking up you don't need really any 'meat', they made/left this slot specifically for adjusting.
