michael
My lovely home PC (IBM 8198-75G) seems to be struggling with BF2 (damn snipers are hard to spot in low res!) so I think I'd best get the graphics card sorted - at the moment I have a 256mb GeForce FX5200 but despite 2.8Ghz and 2GB of ram I'm struggling with BF2 in anything but low res (the min requirements ask for a 5700+ so this is no shock). My problem is a lack of AGP or PCI-E slots on the motherboard and a lack of desire to buy a new one at the moment, it's probably more sensible to swap this but I like to be difficult. So does anyone know where I might get suitably ripped off for using old technology? Ideally I want something better than a GeForce FX 5700 or ATI Radeon 8500 in PCI format (not PCI express or AGP remember!). Am I likely to be able to find anything or am I too many years behind and flogging a dead horse?
garetheves
Id spend the extra 40 quid and get a new motherboard mate. Then add 120 ish for an Nvidia 6600GT and youd be laughing. Thats the card im getting. Stay away from ATI, not worth it. Nvidia all the way.
michael
If I can get a motherboard that just slots in and allows me to use all my current bits and pieces plus AGP / PCI-E I'm happy enough to do that I suppose, I'm just too lazy to learn all about what I need
Bobbeh
Nothing wrong with ATI.
SkyJawa
Nowt wrong with ATI but for the price the 6800GT spanks the equivalent priced ATI. Need a new card in prep for CoD2, and prob looking at the above, otherwise its an X800 or something. need a new PSU to power the bugger too, my 250w won't cut it! Jake
a Radeon 9800 Pro still cuts the mustard in modern games. Should be a reasonable price nowadays.
tobyg
My ATI 9800 Pro plays BF2 in high detail with absoulte no problems at all. mcanny I though it was you that normally posted up the good deals for us !!
Bobbeh
The ATI cards have better quality picture, which you end up paying for but the GeForce cards are great for pushing the polygons (rendering the 3d). You cant go wrong with either card tbh.
DamanC
either card is great imo @ the mo a 6600GT or a 6800GT seem to be very well priced due to the 7 series being let loose, the latter is exceptionally well priced
ScuttleRX
Any one running an sli set-up, cards are starting to get cheap enough to considering 2x6600GT (well, not really considering im skint but you konw what I mean )
Dash Rendar
I concur with previous comments. Buy a new board. Then get a PCI-E card. No point in paying money for something that's already obsolete. I've always been happy with ATI cards, but it really is a matter of choice. michael
mcanny I though it was you that normally posted up the good deals for us !! I'm OK with current stuff but I was hoping someone here would be a retro god and know where I can find a proper card but with normal PCI, it seems I've already got about the best one I can So I guess I'd better show a vague interest in my current motherboard in order to find out what I can replace it with.... I hate doing stuff like this when I get home, it's like being at work

Have you checked overclockers? They have good list of cards.

michael
Yeah I had a look on Overclockers earlier, the 256 choice is fairly limited but if I go for a 128mb card there are a few PCI cards based on the RADEON 9200SE setup but that's not supported either. Those that are: Radeon X700 (PCIe) Radeon X600 (PCIe) GeForce 6600 (PCIe) GeForce PCX 5900 (PCIe) GeForce 5800 Series (AGP) ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition ATI Radeon X800 PRO ATI Radeon 9800 Series ATI Radeon 9600 Series ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350LX) ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700 Series ATI Radeon 8500 Series ATI Radeon X300 Series NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra NVidia GeForce 6800 GT NVidia GeForce 6800 NVidia GeForce FX 5950 Series NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Series NVidia GeForce FX 5700 Series I think I've got used to the idea of swapping the motherboard now, seems like the sensible way forward so that I can keep upgrading other bits if I need to. This is what I have now: http://www.megaboost.co.uk/pc/motherboard-00.JPG It definately needs some blue lights and more fans
