Fulcrum2000
Hi All So I went to my Supe this morning to take the lad to school and did the immobiliser fob like normal, went to turn the key and all there was to be heard was a tiny click and nothing, no whining to attempt to start, no other sound at all. Is this symptomatic of a snafoo'd starter motor? I only had a new one 4 years ago but maybe they dont last that long? I suspected the immobiliser and took the side of the dash off and disconnected it, but it didnt make any difference with or without it. 93JDM TT Auto BPU is my spec if needed. My 535D started first time and just laughed at the Supe in the corner like it has so many times before, I will make this car reliable if it kills me! Bender
Possible battery?
Annabella
Battery, or at least check the battery connections, as had to refit the positive terminal on my mazda yesterday as was hanging off slightly and not starting. Fine after refitting correctly. But four years is a while for a battery.
Fulcrum2000
Battery is a week old as this happened last week and I thought battery too have tried fitting the old one which held a full charge and still nothing
Fulcrum2000
Strangely enough last week when I switched over the battery the car did then start again too maybe it was just a coincidence and the SM was going anyway?
Annabella
Maybe a grounding wire has popped off, if you search on here that can cause a none start.
Fulcrum2000
Ok so day two. I fully charged both batteries over night, tried both and neither start it, I checked all wires coming from the battery, all are connected. Could it be a fuse? If so which would make it not even try and start? I literally get (other than the boost controllers rumble) a single click and no effort to turn the engine over in the slightest so I am guessing either the immobiliser has gone crazy (although it still doesnt start when i disconnect it behind the dash) or perhaps the starter motor has died? Do you get a single click when they die, or does it have a fuse which could have died perhaps? Also does anyone know how you get the forum to alert you when somebody answers your post, I dont know how to do it on the new format (which is very nice by the way). Marty
Does sound like the starter motor to me, although seeing as you had one fairly recently it would be unusual for it to pack in so soon. They normally last a decade or so. The repair is fairly straightforward, assuming you have a good trolley jack and some axle stands. There is even a how to guide on here somewhere. The solenoid contacts are the point of failure, you can buy replacements from toyota for around £30ish, takes an hour or two to do. Fulcrum2000
Do you think its more likely to be the starter motor relay, just been searching around for more info and these are apparently prone to failure and mine could be 27 years old? Toyota want 81 quid for one and they are 9 quid on ebay! Maybe I should bang a new one of these in and if not go for another starter motor? Marty
Personally, i would doubt it was your relay. Your starter motor is clicking, right? Means the relay is working. You could take the top off the relay and have a look at the contacts to see if they are blackened, but it's not something i've heard of being a common problem before, unlike the starter contacts. Give the starter a little tap with something, normally gets it going. Don't think i'd bother buying a whole new starter either when the contact replacement job is so straightforward I will say, i've had two supras where the starter motor contacts have failed. But they've never just completely failed so the car wouldn't start again, it always started off as an intermittent problem with starting, that got worse over time. The replacement starter, was it an OEM one? Edited December 8, 2020 by Marty (see edit history)
Fulcrum2000
Yeah it was oem - I've just stuck my big head out of the car when trying to turn it over and the click seems to be more audible inside the car not out so am wondering if there is no response whatsoever from the starter. I will ask my wife to turn it over when she gets home from work with my big head near the relay and starter and see what I can discern. Pudsey
If its an auto might be worth moving the gear lever selector. Just to make sure the isolation switch isn't stuck. If it thinks it's in gear it won't allow you to start it, and you will get a click and nothing like you describe. Worth a check.
Marty
Well if the click isn't from the starter you can rule that out Good suggestion by Pudsey
